vacation rental description

Come get warm and, if you like, wet! Unspoiled Kahili Beach (known locally as "Rock Quarry" Beach for a plantation-era quarry which existed at one of the headlands that form this broad, white sand, bay beach) is a scenic stroll or very quick drive from this private, newly renovated, comfortably furnished bluff-front beach home.

Another half-dozen world class beaches are within 10 minutes drive...

Beautifully furnished and well-equipped, this is a great home for a couple, honeymooners, small families, or couples traveling together. Tiled kitchen and bathrooms, tropical cloth curtains and pillow covers, comfortable beds with 100% cotton sheets and pillow cases, and lots of soft towels and washcloths.

The master bedroom features a king bed, and the marble master bath
has twin sinks. The second bedroom has a queen bed, and there is a
queen sleeper-sofa in the living room. The home sleeps from 2 to 6
guests, with base prices for couples. In fact, 75% of our guests are couples.

There is a fully equipped entertainment center with cable TV, VCR, DVD, and CD stereo. There is also high-speed wireless DSL internet access, for those who cannnot be on vacation without the world wide web.

Many guests remark that the views are like a painting (and a number of local artists have come to paint it!)- the blue Pacific Ocean, the Kilauea River and river valley, lush, green Crater Hill National Wildlife Preserve, and a nearby tropical jungle waterfall. The generous covered lanai overlooks all these AND the 1.5 acre lushly landscaped property. Tropical fruits abound- bananas, limes, figs, starfruit, and coconuts.

Tour around incredibly beautiful Kauai, including the Na Pali Coast Trail, Kilauea Lighthouse, Hanalei Bay, Tunnels Beach, Waimea Canyon, and more. Go jungle river cruising in the 4 person canoe included for free for a great adventure. Paddles, lifejackets, and roof racks all included. OR, just stay at home & soak in the private outdoor 6-person sunken Kohler hot tub spa!

The home is aptly named- Hale Kai Kalani (House of the Heavenly Sea). It is privately situated on 1.5 acres of land, and conveniently located 1.5 miles outside of Kilauea Town, home of the Kilauea Lighthouse and Crater Hill National Wildlife Refuge, northernmost spot in the inhabited Hawaiian Islands!

We have many return guests who think of Hale Kai Kalani as "their" vacation house in Kauai. Come join those who have experienced Kauai living at its best, and enjoy this piece of heaven on earth.

So let's recap... ocean views, mountain views, acreage privacy, beach proximity, full kitchen, dishwasher, washer, dryer, high speed wireless internet, and a comfortable, affordable home. Come for a honeymoon, a retreat, or for the vacation of a lifetime!

Hale Kai Kalani at 4230 Wailapa Road, Kilauea, Hi. 96754 is a great place to have fun, but it is not a 'party house'. Vehicles must park on site; no on-street parking is allowed. Elevated noise activities or amplified music is not permitted after 10 PM. Mahalo. Kauai NCU # 4312-P.

Testimonials:
We had a fantastic time in this house and on the island of Kauai. we spent the 10 days of our honeymoon relaxing in this beautiful house and exploring the lovely island. I have to say, the photos of this house on the internet don't do it justice. Hope and Bill Lucas, Pennsylvania

The house is great- so well organized it had everything we needed and more... The Lachells, Wisconsin

To say this place is great is an understatement. Expect several references from L.A. and Alaska in the near future. It's a great house in a great area of the island... Chris Lewis, Hermosa Beach

Thank you for the special hospitality you've shown by providing all those things, big and small, that make for a memorable visit, from the beautiful tropical flower bouquet, boogie boards, the canoe, beach towels, your wonderful Welcome to Hale Kai Kalani book- I could go on and on- we felt so welcome and just had a great time! The Bowhay Family, California.

This pad rocked. We've had a great time here. Thanks for providing all the extra toys such as boogie boards, canoe, and home entertainment center. I suggest for anyone staying here that they take a surfing lesson right below at the beach. The sand bottom is safe, and the waves usually quite mellow. The thrill of catching my first wave is something I will never forget. Stuart Gill, Ontario

Dear Bruce and Cyndee, Your lovely, perfect home will always hold a lifetime of wonderful memories for us...Juanita and Monish Nanditer, and baby Ana.

My wife and I are very pleased that good fortune directed us to choose Hale Kai Kalani as our honeymoon destination. The sense of peace that is pervasive on Kaua'i seems to be magnified about this house; the amenities allowed us to feel at home; the natural surroundings are nothing short of spectacular, and the view- well, words cannot describe the view. We'll be back. The Devers, Denver, Colorado (OWNER'S NOTE: The Devers returned for their second anniversery, had another incredible visit, and commented on a number of new improvements to the house.)

SO superior to a stay at a condo or hotel... The Swords, Alaska

We're really going to miss having breakfast on the wonderful lanai. Sunrises and sunsets are nice to watch too. And the birds singing in the morning...glorious! The Kongsles, Washington

We stayed here and loved it. The views are fabulous and it is an easy short drive to a great beach. A very special place.

Owners response: Yes, the view is awesome...Ocean, river, valley, AND the Crater Hill National Wildlife Refuge. Many people, after discovering Kahili-Quarry beach, just a short walk or very short drive down from the house, decide that it is their very favorite beach in Hawaii! Come see what you think, but better make your booking today. The word's out on Hale Kai Kalani...it's wonderful!

Beautiful location

Review submitted: May 11, 2012   Date of arrival: May 28, 2011

This house is in a lovely location and is very environmentally green (maybe soon they will have food compost waste for all the wonderful papayas, mangoes, greens, coconuts, etc.) that were so great to enjoy during our stay. The kitchen is well equipped it and the home is comfortable. It's close to lots of beaches/hikes to explore. The local farmer's markets are a great place to buy produce and Foodland in Princeville is good for things like milk, beer, sunscreen, pokey and sundries. The fish market in Kileau and Hanaleia are also good if you want to cook at home. The bed in the master room is very comfy, wonderful sleeps, but yes, as I've read, the curtain rod always fall down, but no problem, just leave it down because there is no one to look at you other than the cute birds on the lovely lanai. The lanai is very relaxing and a nice place to just put your feet up and chill; we do wish the candles had wax to burn though. The road traffic to and from the beach is an annoyance if you like quietness; the steepest part of the road is right by the house, so you hear trucks/cars all day long. It's a wonderful beach, lots of surfers to watch, but it is NOT a nice walk down because of the traffic. Advise to drive. It was one of our favourite beaches; once you are there you know why all the locals hang ten there. Unfortunately the first half of our holiday was disrupted by a resident rat. No fun coming out to rat activity and feces in the morning...put all your fresh food away. We called Bruce, who is a very warm person, and he was very responsive and brought/set traps for us that day, but it still took four days for my husband/Bruce to catch the bugger. Not relaxing! It's nice that they have a great green disinfectant to use on the countertops, but we wish the miele vacuum in the closet had a sweeping head to clean up the feces, as we just had a broom to use every morning. It was a much more relaxing stay once our visitor was gone, but we were already halfway into our holiday. We've never lived in Hawaii, so perhaps rats are a common problem depending on the time of year, or maybe we were just unlucky as no one else has appeared to experience them at this home. Vist Kahili, Ke'e, and Tunnels beaches, and do the Hanakapil'ia waterfall hike (a little treacherous if it is wet) when you vist. Just lovely!
Thank you Bruce and Cyndee.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway

Owners response: We are happy that Molly and Michael came to stay, and appreciative of their suggestions.

While many of our guests would prefer not to collect food waste for the compost, those who do are welcome to bring it to the compost pile at our family farm down the street. Just be sure to secure it so it does not attract ants or other pests inside the house!
Thanks for bringing the broken curtain rod holder to our attention; it was repaired during your stay as a result.

It seems that, sadly, you did not find the spare votive candles in the cupboard; those ARE nice out on the view lanai.
We are sorry the sound of those heading to and from the beach bothered you. It was particularly busy during the period of your visit, with great weather & beginner-intermediate surfing conditions attracting beachgoers, and the County workers grading and maintaining the right of way to the beach.
Cyndee and I walk to and from the beach from further up the road on an average of 3-4 times per week, and are not bothered by a passing vehicle or two. Often, they are our neighbors and we wave or have a short chat.
OK, you've gotten this far, and now I'm sure that you are all anxiously awaiting what I have to say about Mr. Rat. Well, it's true that this (mostly harmless, country) rodent proved particularly cagey and took a few days to capture in one of the traps I set. We do not like to use poison when very occasionally we are faced with this issue, and if you have ever experienced a dead or dying rodent somewhere inaccessible like in a wall, you know why. Life in the sub-tropics has its challenges, and while we do our best to mitigate and minimize them, there are hurricanes, tsunamis, and the occasional pest. Critters like living here too, and despite our best efforts to dissuade them without creating a toxic wasteland of poisons, they do occasionally slip through our defenses. Dealing with these issues is typical for those of us who live here full-time, but I do understand how uncomfortable people can be if they are unlucky enough to find evidence of unwanted visitors like rodent feces. Yuck, and my apologies for the experience!
Given the inconveniences suffered by Michael and Molly, I am grateful, and even a little surprised, that we earned a review of 3 stars out of a possible 5. We must be doing the majority of things right and, if you feel that staying at this view home above the beach for a price less than most hotel rooms here on Kauai, please get in touch.
Aloha, Bruce

My wife and I spent 9 days staying in this secluded corner of paradise. We loved it. The house was just as shown on the website but even better in the experience. The layout is terrific. Everything is in perfect order and clean. The lanai and hottub were great and we used them often. The outdoor shower was perfect and handy for cooling off during the warm afternoons or after a soak in the hottub. May have to install one in my California home.

The couch in the living room needs to be upgraded and maybe the screens could be secured a little better for mosquito prevention after dark.

Bruce and Cyndee were perfect hosts and willing to help (although we never felt the need for assistance) and very discreet.

This location was very handy to many great beaches and towns on the northshore. Just down the dirt road from the house is Rock Quarry Beach, great for swimming and surfing and we used it often. We plan on returning often.

Recommended for: age 55+, sight seeing, romantic getaway

Owners response: We are happy, as always, to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay at Hale Kai Kalani. It sounds like Craig and Vickie took full advantage of the location and the amenities. We give them thanks for their comments on fastening screens more securely and an upgrade on one of the living room couches, and will get on that right away! Thanks for your visit, and glad to hear that we can look forward to seeing you again in the not-too-distant future.
