vacation rental description
Surrounded by flowering window boxes, our Vintage Cottage and Guest House are enclosed by lush ferns, and century’s old towering pines and stone walls. And both properties have been “grandfathered in.” Therefore, the Cottage is only 20' fromLakeThompson (11 miles long, max depth of 121', with several islands). From the front porch with a breathtaking view, you can walk to a sandy swimming area created especially for children. Since the lake is spring fed by the Poland Springs aquifer, it's considered to be one of the most pristine lakes inMaine.
We are on the East side and so we get spectacular sunsets. A peaceful, private setting, we have no ambient light so you see lots of stars, and you won't believe how quiet it is! We are the last cottage on our road, neighboring the Fernwood Girls Camp, and so we enjoy all of the land they own as a buffer between them and private cottages. We have been great neighbors for over 60 years. Duck families will visit, loons will serenade you; very good fishing for salmon, lake trout and bass; and in the fall I have often sited deer, moose, foxes, etc.
The Cottage and Guest House has 3/4" pine paneling throughout; all new thermopane windows – many added to see the incredible pines and lake; skylights that open to the stars; new kitchen and bath with tub/shower; porch surrounded by casement windows, and a 10 ft bear sculpture to welcome our guests.
Cottage is open from the kitchen to the family room which has a cathedral ceiling with paddle fan and clerestory windows providing lots of light and wonderful views from the loft. Great for entertaining.
Guest House has a 2nd floor dorm room with a cathedral ceiling, 2 skylights, a paddle fan, 2 queen beds and one set of bunk beds. First floor includes washer and dryer, but has been refurbished with ¾ pine walls and ceiling and has a queen bed and bunk beds.

activities and attractions in Poland Spring Maine
Snorkel and be amazed by the huge boulders left by glaciers, especially at Potash Cove and near some of the islands. Swim quietly along the shore and you might find a curious loon tagging along... I have.
Situated just an hour away from the Portland airport and the coast, you can visit many white sand ocean beaches, and quaint towns filled with shops, fine restaurants, and art galleries, from Kennebunkport to Acadia National Park. Take a ferry to many of the islands off the coast. Did you know that the ME coastline has more miles than the CA coastline?
In the immediate surrounding area, there is the only Shaker Village left that has Shakers still living there - the tour is great. America's oldest resort golf course in America, located at Poland Spring Inn, is a few short miles away. There is a wildlife preserve that will keep you busy all day so bring a picnic lunch! I still love Old Orchard Beach (about an hour away). I love the old architecture and the amusement park Palace Playland. There are MANY other ocean beaches nearby. We go for a swim in the ocean, then come back to the cottage and wash the salt off in the lake.
Check Down East magazine and the many tourist and visitor guides on
the Internet to see a full list of events, festivals, and attractions.

Lake Thompson is unique to the US since it is spring fed (Poland Springs) and crystal clear. It is also a big, deep, interesting glacial lake. My Dad was part of the Association that began over 50 years ago and has kept this lake one of the top lakes in ME - and there are over 2000 lakes in ME.
Weekly rental: $1,500. We rent from Saturday to Saturday only. I DO NOT RENT ON A NIGHTLY BASIS... too expensive to clean after ya. In June, September and October, the weather is less predictable for swimming. In years past it's been still very warm in the Fall and in the last 2 weeks of June, but it's hard to know what to expect these days. If you wish to rent for more than one week, please inquire. The cottage has no running water in the winter, but we can accommodate you from May to October.
The property will be cleaned before you arrive and we ask that leave it as you found it. We ask that you remove your own trash - dump is less than a mile away.
Deposit fee of $400 is due with lease agreement, and rental fee is due prior to 30 days of rental date. Deposit will be returned if there is no damage or excessive cleaning.
Pets are negotiable. NO smoking inside. We suggest you use a sand filled container outside and empty it into your trash.
