Syracuse and Cortland in the heart of Central New York.
Cortland is known as the Seven Valleys region. Surrounded by
hills that were deposited by the retreating glaciers 10,000 years
ago, it is a very scenic and diverse area. Little York Lake is
nestled between two such hills just north of Cortland.
The man-made lake was formed around the turn of the century and was
used to harvest ice by the Little York Ice Company. The brown house
that is four houses down from the cottage was the icehouse. The
icehouse is where ice was stored, to be used later throughout the
summer months. The bay next to my parents house is where the ice was
actually harvested from.
Dwyer Memorial Park is at the north end of the lake. There you can
catch a play at the Cortland Repertory Theater, wade in the streams
or wading pool, play ball, even launch your boat at the public
launch.
The Finger Lakes Trail is nearby for hiking. There are many
waterfalls in the region. Some of the most beautiful and amazing
geologic formations in New York are less than an hours drive.
Syracuse is only a 25 minutes drive north. There you can dine, go to
the Museum Of Science and Technology(MOST), the Everson Museum, the
Erie Canal Museum, or the Salt Museum. Some of the most important
battles in the Revolutionary War, the French/Indian War, and the War
of 1812 took place on or around the water ways in Central New York.
Come see for yourself. There is a lot to learn here. Hope to see you
soon.
