Tips for reading ads:

- all Portland rentals are required to collect both city and state vacation rental/lodging taxes; currently at 12.5% combined. Be wary of properties that do not list the tax, claim the tax is included in the price, or state they are not required to collect tax. The authorities may speak to them, and the owner may try to charge you for tax after you've already made your reservation.

-be aware of the type of property you're viewing. Some properties on some sites may be listed as houses, when they're actually condos (duplexes, triplexes, or more).

-do ask whether the property is currently on the market to be sold, or if it's going to be listed before your visit, especially if you're booking for a stay in a few months. Make sure you have a place to sleep during your vacation!
