Vacation rental gone bad

Madeline (Tampa, FL)
Review submitted: September 9, 2012   Date of arrival: July 23, 2012

We checked into the home in the evening and it was 92 degrees inside, very hot. We contacted the owner and she said that there was no air in the home and that it is unusually hot this time of year. My husband called back to see if she would work with us to accommodate this problem and asked if she would be willing to refund $20 a night so we can get additional fans for the home, she said no. He even went down to $10 refund a night and she still said no, that she had other people she could have rented it to.

We were forced to stay overnight and throughout the rest of the evening when we open the windows from the porch and the bedrooms downstairs there were several, I mean several spiders and bugs coming into the home. We had to by bug spray and was killing spiders coming into the home with our shoes. We had to close the windows to the porch and bedrooms because I didn't want my two year old to be bit by spiders.

The next morning we opened the door to the porch and it was so dirty, there was rotting wood and several rusty nails and staples in a few areas that it was unsafe for my child to play on it. We could not even keep the side door open upstairs because it was rusted and broken that I was afraid that my child could get hurt or get out the door. We also was going to take our child outside to play in the yard but the grass was not mowed and it came it my child's knees, which I felt was not good for my child to play in.

I tried to contact the owner and explain all the problems and that it was unsafe for my child and that we would like to work out a deal so that we may find another place. She was at work and refused to help in refunding any monies and said if she knew I was so picky that she would have not rented to us. I tried several times to get her on the phone but there was no luck, only texts. The owner verbally attack me by saying that I had issues and needed to seek counseling. Which is very unprofessional, I even texted her several photos of all the nails, bugs, broken door, etc.. and she told me to remove the rusty nails and throw them away myself and that bugs are normal on the lake. We had to rent another place paying a little more but it was so worth it.

I then tried to contact The owner regarding our deposit when we returned home and tried one last time to see if she would work with us on settling this before I had to take legal action and she came up with excuses, so now I have only one choice.

Owners response: This review is completely false and is written by a woman looking for a free vacation. The home was built around 1999 and does not have rotted wood and in no way is unsafe. The home has vinyl siding and everything else is finished in aluminum trim. There is a ceiling fan in every room and the breeze off Lake Michigan does not warrant central air conditioning, nor was it ever represented that there was air conditioning.

She commented on what a beautiful home it is and the decorating. The story changed when she could not extort money.

The cleaning depost was returned to the renter, which had her old address on the check.

Heavenly

My friend and I just recently returned from a 3 day stay at the Beach House in Algoma. To say it was relaxing would be an understatement.
The house itself is very spacious, lovingly and delightfully decorated in a seaside style. Every room in the house has windows facing a wonderful view of Lake Michigan.
The owner,Jane, was very helpful and the renting process went smoothly.
I would definitely recommend this property to anyone wanting privacy, relaxation and a good area for shopping and sightseeing.

We were very sad to leave and hoping we can return when our schedules allow.

Thank you Jane ! ! ! !

Better than Expected!

We prepared for the worst but were delightfully surprised! I arrived a few hours before sunset and the house and property looked beautiful. The house was neat and clean. There screened in porch was amazing to sit on in the morning with a cup of coffee. All in all I was very happy with my experience and would love to stay here again. On top of that, I kept in touch with Jane throughout the renting process and she was beyond helpful and prompt with her responses. She put my mind to ease as this was my first time doing something of this nature. As a side note, take the time to drive up to Stones Throw Winery. Best wine I have ever had. We did wine tastings at all of the wineries in Door county and it blew them all out of the water.
