Perhaps you are contemplating living here or making at least an extended visit. Here are a few suggestions for satisfying and fun things to do. Sports & Games / Outdoors Favorite activities in Ojai include tennis and golf, swimming in pools and in the ocean and hiking in mountains. More exotic adventures include: jumping off mountains with various sorts of wings, kitesurfing, riding bicycles fast and slow and motorcycling in diverse and interesting terrain. The ocean and the mountains are both about twelve minutes away in different directions. Ojai is in a valley with vast avocado and citrus orchards, a wide array of shops and lots of private schools. The Ojai, a century old tennis tournament, allows spectators up close and participation in both an Open tournament and the Pac-10 tournament. Cultural and Educational Events The highly acclaimed Ojai Festival fills the Libbey Bowl every June. The Los Angeles Philhamonic, soloists and ensembles play under the stars in Ojai for three days and nights. In Ojai Throughout the year you will find: a Storytelling Festival, a Yoga Conference (Yoga Crib), Shakespeare in the Park, the Ojai Film Festival, Playwrights Conference, Lavendar Festival, Poetry Festival, Art Walk, etc.. Libraries and Bookstores Just before entering Ojai, you'll pass Krotona Center for Theosophy with school, library and bookstore. The Krishnmurti Foundation maintains a library on the East End of town near the Thacher School. Bart's Books is a unique outdoor used bookstore. Both are in the heart of downtown Ojai. Raising Children and Growing Old (or growing young) This small town of Ojai, with proximity to Santa Barbara and Los Angeles maintains a distinct personality. Many do not commute to larger communities on a daily basis, but rather live and work here, while others commute. The demographic of Ojai reflects a comfortable balance of growing families, eccentric artists and retired folk. Right now, for example, it’s March. The rains have passed and the mountains are in bloom. Streams run and the mountains are green. There is still snow on the peaks of the Topa Topa mountain range, five thousand feet above sea level. Families play in the park. Art films are shown on Sunday afternoon in the Ojai Playhouse. Theater 150 has a one-man show this month, imported from some large city. We are enjoying a very warm and satisfying spring, though most roses are still dormant, the air is fresh. Café Society People have strong opinions about where they have morning coffee (there are at least 3 coffee shops within city limts), and while they are mostly loyal to their favorite café, they may actually move around a bit. Solutions to the world’s problems can be found at the Ojai Roasting Company while explanations of local complaints are spoken aloud in Java Joe's. The Café Emporium allows you to have breakfast outdoors on the patio, and The Inn pampers you in resort fashion. Similarly in the evenings, Ojai has a number of good restaurants: Suzanne's, Ranch House, Ojai Valley Inn, Farmer & the Cook, Sakura, Azu, Auberge, Exotic Thai; not to mention that the Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings is an easy walk. There’s a quite a bit of variety for a small town!
