Nestled among multi-million dollar homes, Eaton House (former home of U.S. Congressman Charles A. Eaton) is a lovely antique farmhouse offering 7/8 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 5 woodburning fireplaces, approx. 1000 SF Gourmet kitchen, formal living, dining, media room/office, den, laundry room and outdoor courtyard. The home is centrally air-conditioned throughout and sleeps 25 on 8 beds and 10 couches.
A tranquil escape set on about 2 acres of lush greenery, Eaton House is a short distance outside Manhattan in Watchung, NJ. It is the ideal getaway to celebrate a special occasion, family reunion or serve as a base from which to explore New York City, while still enjoying the warmth, comfort and relaxation only a large country home located in one of New Jersey's most affluent counties can provide.
If you take the train from Midtown Manhattan (Penn Station) to Summit, NJ, you can rent a car from Enterprise at 1/4 of what you'll pay in NYC. Enterprise will meet you at the station and take you to your car. The house is just a short drive from the Summit, NJ transit station. Likewise, the home is minutes away from the Short Hills Mall as well as the restaurants, stores and malls (such as Bloomies) in downtown Westfield.
The 100 year-old Eaton House takes you back in time with its authentic rooms, 5 woodburning fireplaces, beamed ceilings, original woodwork, oak floors and wood panelling. A short walk from the house takes you to two beautiful parks, one on a small lake and the other on Watchung Lake with lovely waterfalls. Both parks are ideal for exercising, jogging, fishing, or simply relaxing on a bench and enjoying the country air, waterfalls, or simply watching the flocks of ducks on the lake. You may also take a quick walk to the quaint country public library and art gallery on the corner, or the Arts Center which hosts a wide variety of art exhibitions as well as high quality musical performances by classical, rock, jazz and other artists as well as comedy and improv performances (the Arts Center also offers a variety of classes in drawing, photography and music), or shop for Stickley and other antique reproduction furniture at Valley Furniture.
If you wish to avoid the clamor of NYC but still indulge in top Zagat rated cuisine, take a quick walk to Water & Wine on Watchung Lake with its lovely views, extensive wine list and delectable Italian food! About a mile away, is the magnificiently renovated Stonehouse Restaurant on Stirling Road, a $15 million renovation project. Stonehouse chefs Jerry Villa and Lee Wong worked previously at Bernards Inn. A wide variety of other excellent restaurants are within a few miles drive from the home in Summit, such as Roots Steakhouse, the Hunt Club Restaurant & Lounge, Broadway Grill, Food, Monster Sushi, Dabbawalla and Winberries in the Summit Opera House. Also, the Fore Seasons and Papparazzi in Short Hills, 503 Park, Il Pomodoro, La Scala, and the Tap Room are less than 10 mins away. Within a 15 min drive is Bernards Inn offering 2 magnificent dining rooms and a terrific jazz bar; also the Pluckemin Inn in Bedminster offers a Friday Dinner Club where you may enjoy a 4 course-meal and cocktail for $100 per person.
Richard Branson's Natirar and 90 Acres Farm are also within a 20 min drive from the house. Enjoy a stroll on the beautiful grounds of 90 Acres with a view of the Mansion, savor a fantastic dining experience at their Culinary Instiute or just pop in for a drink and/or casual fare at the bar or the communal dining table in the adjacent Cognac Room.
Closer to home, outdoor lovers can enjoy 2000 acres of walking trails, riding stables, and various outdoor activities just a few miles away from the house. A 50-acre Lodge with numerous facilities & corporate activities is about 5 mins away. The Short Hills Mall and Papermill Playhouse are about a 10 minute drive from the home. For antique lovers, there are numerous antique stores nearby as well as spectacular period reproductions on offer within 5 blocks from the house.
A short drive from the house is the Life Time Fitness Club, a massive sports club, offering tennis and squash courts, indoor and outdoor olympic sized swimming pools, salon and spa facilities with saunas, steamrooms, jacuzzis, etc, a huge selection of fitness classes, including yoga, pilates, aerobic, dance and other classes.
