traveler reviews for this makaha house rental

Perfect for our vow renewals !!!

Review submitted: July 30, 2014   Date of arrival: July 18, 2014

My husband and I decided that we wanted to renew our vows in Hawai'i and thought a beach house would be an ideal venue to not only have it but also to spend time with friends and family.
After SCOURING vrbo, I came across the Turtle House in Waianae. The pictures were beautiful ! This was actually my FIRST time on vrbo and I was a bit hesitant because I know pictures may not represent how the property currently looks like but the reviews were so positive that I decided to take a chance. And boy, am I glad I did !
From beginning to end both Rita and Heidi (admin assistant/property manager) were very easy to work with, and they were always prompt in responding to my emails. Debi, who was our hostess for the turtle house was an absolute sweetheart and made us feel completely at home.
First off, the pictures on vrbo are very accurate ! Its exactly as what you see if not better ! I love that we had our own private gated driveway. It made parking very easy and also made us feel safe, not to mention that they also have an alarm for the house. I am VERY picky about the cleanliness of rentals/hotel rooms and I'm happy to say that upon arriving, the turtle house was spotless. The kitchen is well stocked with all the necessities needed, pots, pans, cups etc. I was very happy to see they also had a rice cooker ! (Yay ! ) They also have a washer and dryer to use. The view that the turtle house has from the backyard is absolutely BREATHTAKING !!!! Pictures do not do this view justice. Every morning, and throughout the day the family and I sat outside and ate , enjoying the view and just soaking in all that the turtle house had to offer.
The day of our vow renewals could not be any perfect. There was only a small group of us (25 ppl ) and there was more than enough room for everyone. The tiki bar was GREAT to have. It made serving beverages a lot easier, they have a large Ice cooler inside as well as a small music system where you could plug your ipod into. And the backdrop to our ceremony ( which faced the ocean view ) was just AMAZING !
Just as a heads up, the turtle house does not have central AC, and it can get pretty hot. There are fans in many of the rooms which help alleviate the heat. In all honesty, it didn't bother us as much. Also there are very few places to eat in the area, only fast food spots like taco bell , etc. You'll need to drive about 20 min to get to a Costco or Target.
Thank you for having us ! Our time in Hawai'i couldn't be any more perfect

Owners response: Many mahalos as we thank you for Blessing our Home with your renewal of vows. AND we heard through the "coconut wireless" you were absolutely breathtaking in your dress.
We try and will continue to improve as suggestions come our way.
Hope to see you back before your 25th. Anniversary.

Wonderful views but comes with a WARNING

Review submitted: July 17, 2014   Date of arrival: June 22, 2014

Our extended family had a wonderful week in west Oahu. The best feature of this property is the amazing huge backyard with views, sunsets & crashing waves. Our concerns began as we approached the neighborhood...a combo of nice but some run down houses with bars on windows & fenced dogs in yards. We were greeted by Debi who didn't have the Aloha Spirit we would have expected & asked her if crime was a problem here. Her answer was "There is crime everywhere".We also were made uncomfortable when we were asked to fill out a report with all damages found in the house so we wouldn't be held responsible. This was very STRESSFUL & felt like we had to be on an egg hunt to find damages. We have communicated this to the owners and they have assured us that they have made changes. We used the alarm & were diligent to spend the 10 min to close & lock all the windows of the house & gate. This is annoying to do even if you leave for a short while. The Turtle Bar in backyard has shutters that open with a crank. Opening & closing is not easy & if you decide to use the bar, you will not want to close every time you go down to the beach. The owners said they just had it serviced but it is still difficult. Fortunately, we did a sweep of the backyard when we left to move iPads, laptops, speakers. We had NO idea that the backyard would be a target of thieves. Evidently the contract tells to lock the turtle bar EVERY time you leave. There was a very old school music system in corner of bar. Our group ignored it as we had our music. We got a phone call as we drove to airport from Debi asking if we had moved stereo system. Apparently, locals were in the yard looking for valuables & all they could find was an outdated music system. The owners feel that it's your responsibility if anything is taken at the house even if you take precautions & will charge you for it. We wouldn't recommend you stay here despite its wonderful yard. We found many items that aren't maintained/broken ice maker, ice trays, toaster, old towels & bedding etc.The $127 replaced a $47 stereo, gas to buy it & light bar. Owners need to secure yard to keep locals from walking up low lava wall. They assured us they have not had any recent thefts but told us they remove hose handles to prevent people coming into yard to use water. New stereo will now be a target unless you do a total lock down. This is a nice property with wonderful view but we felt we needed to share what happened to us.

Owners response: Over the years we've had hundreds of overnight & event guests at this home & few negative reviews posted -not making excuses as we want every guest to take away fond memories.

We thank him for his comments about the best feature of the property, & we concur this location is truly one of Nature's bests.

Yes, this is a mixed neighborhood. We have family homes with fenced yards, dogs, children and million dollar homes. Our street has School District employees, another Vacation Home with bars because it is not rented frequently, a new home who kept the traditional Hawaiian home on the lot for an office, an RN, a week-end home, an MD, a security guard at a hotel & long term rentals. I think "they" would be offended that someone expressed these thoughts about their neighborhood.

Comments about Debi: he might not have liked the way she said it, but it's true. Signs are posted on beaches, in parks, & rental vehicles advising guests to watch their valuables. We have little crime on the Island, but we do have petty theft. That being said, Debi DID take his comments to heart as there is ALWAYS room for improvement.

Check in: we accept the constructive criticism. We felt to let the guest do the walk through without our tagging along would work. We have revised the process walking the guest through so we can answer questions, point out things, and acquaint them with the home. Good results!

Yes, we do ask the guest to lock up and use the code we provide for their stay. While this is the first incident in years, we still follow the "ounce of prevention vs the pound of cure".
I am bothered that the guest took the time to protect their valuables and chose not to secure the bar area of our million dollar home.

The 30" high manual shutters were serviced in past 6 months & new tips installed. Maintenance verified working; will
verify guest instructed. Hose handles are removed when house not occupied. Surfers rinse off & leave water on causing high water bills. Guest called and had his hands on handle in kitchen drawer before he hung up.

On going maintenance with a Vacation Home on the ocean is continuous. The ice maker repair has been a challenge, and our solution may have to be a new refrigerator.

I am sorry he didn't share that when the twin bed the energetic child was using needed repair, Maintenance was there same day & additional propane delivered at his request, again same day.

Are we perfect? No. Do we try? Yes. And constructive comments welcome.

Beautiful oceanfront home!

Review submitted: April 8, 2014   Date of arrival: April 1, 2014

We found this rental and took a chance going to the most west side of the island. We are so glad we did! We loved the country feel!! No touristy feel here! My husband and his family (2 brothers and their families along with mom and 90 yr old grandma) loved the house but enjoyed the lanai the most! The ocean view is breathtaking. Every day we ate at home, we ate in the Lanai enjoying the sound of the waves crashing and the awesome view. When we prepped the meals/washed dishes we faced the ocean. We got to spend time in the evenings at the outside bar and BBQ steaks and chicken. When we weren't in the house we missed it! We had perfect view of the sunset! Some of us woke up early just to sit out in the back drinking coffee and watching/listening to the waves. The home fit 12 of us comfortably! Just a short walk away from a small beach where there are lots of tutles! Just a super short drive is the beautiful Yokohama beach!

The home has an alarm system and is gated and felt super safe. Probably needs a touch up on paint. Having a washer and dryer was super helpful. The property is well maintained. They provide a few days of materials such as toilet paper, paper towers, etc...

I received a couple emails just checking in on how we were doing and always making sure we knew how and when we could contact them.

There is a Costco just 15-20 mins away so we stocked up on what we needed for the week. The house has all you need to cook and serve a meal including a rice cooker (we loved that!) There is a supermarket just down the street and some fast food locations like Mcdonalds and Taco Bell but we didn't bother with those :) We ate at one of the Aulani restaurants only 20 mins away and travelled to North Shore stopping at many of the popular stops.

We would definitely come back!

Owners response: Mahalo, We are glad you enjoyed the Lanai as it truly is a great spot to gather and relax to enjoy the beauty this side of the island has to offer. We strive to provide a well maintained home and painting is definitely on our "to do" list.
