Gaeta, a small, ancient town on the Mediterranean, is about an hour or so by express train from either city, making it a convenient base for day trips to Rome, Naples, Amalfi, Capri, Pompeii, Monte Cassino and many medieval hillside towns and villages. But best of all, it is an enchanting destination by itself, with Roman ruins, medieval alleyways, Renaissance churches and, even better, its fabulous food. The villa offers visitors a peaceful escape with its lush gardens, its airy apartments and broad terraces overlooking the sea. The villa's four apartments face the sea with views from windows, balconies and terraces. Each apartment has been painstakingly renovated, and updated with 21st century luxuries -- including air-conditioning. The apartments are available individually by the week or month; or the entire villa can be booked for family, corporate or academic groups. The villa, which has been owned by the Accetta family for generations, has four fully furnished apartments with beautifully appointed bathrooms, ranging from a studio that sleeps two to a two- bedroom spacious apartment with a full terrace that sleeps up to six. Each apartment has a stunning sea view. Steps lead from the large, panoramic terraces down to the seashore and the villa's private beach with sun chairs and umbrellas. The villa itself is built on Roman foundations; but even more intriguing, the property sits on top of a fresh-water spring called Artacia Fons that flows from a grotto beneath the villa into the sea. According to ancient writings of Homer and Virgil, this is the spring where Ulysses and his crew found drinkable water after weeks at sea. Vacation Rental AmenitiesAmenities: All apartments have a washer, TV and microwave and are fully furnished, including kitchen utensils and dishes. Baby bed on request; request additional beds at booking (extra charge). Included in the price: electricity up to 330 KWH, Hot water, weekly change of linen & towels on Saturday. Heating not included. Not wheelchair accessible due to the stairs. The beach area has deck chairs and sunbeds and umbrella; nice and quiet corners in the gardens are available for relaxing. Activities and AttractionsGaeta and its neighbor town, Formia offer countless ancient sites to explore, from Roman remnants such as the tomb on top of Monte Orlando, to Cicero's memorial tower, and the ruins of Roman villas in Formia. Medieval sites include Monte Spiaccata, or Split Mountain, a spectacular series of clefts in the rocky promontory of Gaeta that faces the sea. A place of religious pilgrimage, Split Mountain has a chapel built into one of the clefts, and another has a stairway built into the cliffside down several hundred steps to the base of the Turkish Grotto, a stunning spot where turquoise waves crash into the cliffside. A few miles north on the coast lies Sperlonga, a small, white-washed village on a promontory high above the sea. Its meandering and interconnected streets are too narrow for cars, leaving it much as it was centuries ago when the coast was under attack by Saracens. A scene is lovingly repainted each year by residents, showing an attack on the town centuries before. Just to the south, and visible from the heights of the village, is the site of the summer palace of Tiberius. Yes, Tiberius Caesar Augustus. The great, cool cave where the emperor would entertain his guests is still there, and visitors can tread the same ground as Caesars and Senators of Rome and orators such as Cicero. A museum holds some of the statuary and mosaics that have been unearthed at the site. Ferry trips are available several times a day from the port of Formia, departing to the Pontine Islands, Ischia and other points off shore. If the villa's private beach seems a bit quiet, some of the best beaches in Italy are mere steps away from the villa. Getting Around: The local bus can take you to the train station (10 min) and beaches at Serapo, Vindicio and Sperlonga. Trains depart from Formia to Rome or Naples every hour during the day. Excellent local transportation to many surrounding cities. Vacation Rental RatesThe villa may be rented as a whole (sleeps up to 18), or as four apartments of varied sizes.
