traveler reviews for this burnsville house rental

Let's talk about the cabin.

Review submitted: June 17, 2013   Date of arrival: July 15, 2012

We stayed at this cabin for a little over 6 weeks in 2012. I'm not positive about our arrival date but I know our departure date was September 1, 2012. I agree with the other reviews in terms of the area. It is just a beautiful area with lots to do. In addition to things mentioned by others, there's a great apple orchard that gives hay rides and has a nice little gift shop along with country ,and mountain music groups who play on weekends. There is also another place that offers mountain music at night on weekends a wee bit north of Burnsville on the main route past town. During the 1 st week of August, every year the Yancey County arts and Crafts Festival is held on the town common. Each year I think the crafts get better as well as the arts and the prices are very reasonable.

Now to the house: here it was in the middle of summer and the owners refused to replace the front storm door with a screen door. Windows were very difficult in some cases, impossible to open; so we could never appreciate the nice breezes. The kitchen faucet leaked which we repeatedly reported and it was not fixed. The sofa is old and terribly uncomfortable. I often noticed the distinct smell of mold or mildew in the house which left my throat feeling scratchy. The pictures make it look far, FAR nicer than it really is. I suspect if you are only staying for a day or three, you could and probably would put up with the troubles in this cabin but, believe me, the inside is OLD even though the outside has clearly been refurbished. I would not recommend this property to anyone.

Owners response: This house has been refurbished in last 5 years with wood floors being added along with an expensive glass storm door and new furnishings inside. The house has kept its cottage appeal with original windows and wood furnishes. With all old houses some things don't work as efficient as they do in newer homes..This is a lovely cabin and has had many of satisfied renters, the proof is in the pudding..

I cannot begin to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at the Bear's Den! My entire family had such a wonderful time that we are hoping the cabin is available the same time next year. We would love to make this stay a yearly tradition. Thank you for letting our family come together and enjoy being with each other. It can be hard sometimes with 4 children, but this trip opened my eyes to our joyous children and loving family!

Thank you so much and I hope to be talking with you again soon!

Our Family Vacation

Review submitted: September 14, 2010   Date of arrival: July 5, 2010

We have not had a family vacation like this ever before! There are 6 of us and we finally found a location to suit all of our needs. My babies loved being in the water while my older two loved rafting downt the Toe River. My husband and I loved sitting back, relaxing, and enjoying our time together. This house is in a wonderful location where it is quiet and enjoyable. My parents live in the area in Burnsville and came out for dinner one night. My dad enjoyed the house so much that he is now looking into renting it for a weekend get a way. I am so hopeful that it will be available agin the same time next year as my 4 year old is still talking about "our other house...the one we stayed in when we went camping". For a 4 year old to remember such details, you know it was a wonderful vacation for us all!

Recommended for: age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway
