Casa Caribaea is nestled five minutes from central Uvita up a quiet paved road. Set on 2.5 acres and bordered by hundreds of acres of primary jungle in a verdant garden setting, it comprises only two residences. From the moment you enter the luxuriant garden estate, your holiday is suffused with tropical serenity.

Designed along the lines of a Balinese village in the hills, Casa Caribaea projects a theme of simplistic elegance. The buildings use local stones and hardwoods blending seamlessly into the environment. The gardens are generously given center stage and provide a wonderful contrast against the sweeping ocean views that include both the Whale’s Tail and Cano Island. The spacious infinity edge pool is flanked by a large pagoda style home that serves as the principle entertainment area. The informal and accommodating owners live on the second and third floor of the pagoda style home and are friendly and full of information. The barbeque is conveniently situated between the pool and the bar and spectacular sunset ocean views can be seen from every angle. The rental villa is privately situated 40 yards away and enjoys sunset ocean views from the main living room.

Rooms are a sensuous combination of luxury and homespun charm. The latter comes in the form of antiques collected by the owners on their travels and the unique furniture created by local wood artisan Eduardo Mancini. All bathrooms and kitchens are spacious and lined with white quartz. The radial ceiling beams supporting the cathedral design are made of Nispero, a local hard wood. The hand-crafted wood windows encourage guests to take advantage of the continuous breezes that whip through the property but all rooms also have air conditioning and fans. Flower arrangements are decoratively arranged throughout the living quarters showcasing the prized jewels of the garden.

Tropical abundance as a phrase does not do justice to the profusion and variety of plants here. Heliconias, gingers, bromeliads and palms are constantly attracting birds and butterflies. Many of the species will be unrecognizable to most as the owner has been meticulously collecting rare plants for several years. The garden boasts the largest collection of heliconias within the country at over 110 varieties and counting. There are also over 150 palm varieties on display. Several rare species endemic to Madagascar and New Caledonia are littered throughout the landscape. A series of limestone walkways, wooden bridges, pergolas and streams run through the property. Many of these meander through primary rainforest giving wildlife lovers more opportunities to gaze at toucans and howler monkeys.

The staff prides itself on local knowledge and tailor-made excursions are created to help guests appreciate Southern Costa Rica. Cultural tours include visits to a small artisan vanilla farm, rainforest canopy zip-lines and excursions to Boruca, an indigenous village with celebrated craftspeople. Courses on a range of activities, including basket weaving with local materials, Spanish language classes, and Reiki energy workshops, can be organized. There are a range of more activity-oriented excursions: guided walks, waterfall canyon rappelling, ATV trail riding, sport fishing and mountain biking (with a wide tire option for beach rides). Private yoga and surf lessons can also be coordinated. The owner is an avid surfer and can suggest the best places to surf for a given experience level. A unique botanic tour, which visits some of the most spectacular private tropical gardens in the area, is a must for plant enthusiasts. Spa services are also available upon request.

      • The property is up a short distance from the highway on a paved road in the Jardines del Morete development. Unlike most of the homes in Uvita, which can often take more than twenty minutes to reach in a 4x4, it only takes three minutes to reach central Uvita from the property. There are sweeping 180 degree ocean views and the property is the first ocean view property on the road that borders primary rainforest (affording rewarding wildlife experiences).

My wife and I stayed here for a few weeks in March. It was amazing. The two bedroom was perfect for us, clean, breezy (AC would really cool it down as well), nice little open kitchen & island to prep your fish, make a drink, relax around. Really nice bathrooms as well. Doña, the awesome housekeeper, keeps the place spotless daily & is so sweet. There is a great spot to park your car right in front of the house. The main house and pool are really nice and we spent a lot of time at the pool enjoying the views, birds and abundant wildlife. Great sunsets after a day at the beach. Jason and Victoria were both really helpful with anything we needed or questions we had......learned about another surf spot, where to buy shrimp & tuna, and Victoria even helped me find an acupuncturist after I hurt my shoulder surfing. We had a great time meeting their kids and playing with Wally and Wednesday (the "guard dogs"). There is a really neat trail that winds behind the houses and down by a little creek. In just a few steps you are really in the middle of the rain forest. We hiked down here a few mornings and watched the howler monkeys on their morning commute. There is also a small hotel just up the road (literally a 2 minute walk) where you can go for a meal. We liked to hike up the road occasionally in the morning (for the views and exercise) and stop here for a smoothie or Tico breakfast.
The proximity to the main road is another great quality of the house. You are up in the hills and secluded...but it's partially paved and a super easy few minutes up or down. We rented another property after our stay here (to accommodate more guests) and found ourselves wishing we had stayed here the whole time. It was excellent.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, families with young children, families with teenagers, sight seeing, romantic getaway

Great property in Uvita.

This property was all we had hoped for and more. Our hosts (and their two great dogs) were friendly and easy to talk to. Several beaches are nearby and the view from the pool is drop dead gorgeous.

Great Location, Beautiful View, Friendly Owners

My husband and I recently stayed at Casa Caribaea for our second annual 10 day stint in Uvita. Last year, we had a great time at Oxygen Jungle Villas, just up the road, but this year, we wanted something with a full kitchen and just a little more space. But at the same time, we still wanted the view, proximity to town, and not to pay $200-$300 per night for just the two of us.

Casa Caribaea is the perfect size. It's a 2 bed 2 bath with a great little kitchen and living area, vaulted ceilings and plenty of windows in the front room that face the ocean. It's a second story building set behind the main residence so you get your privacy and your vehicle gets to sit safely in the driveway, where there is 24 hour surveillance thanks to the full live-in staff.

The main house that Jason & Victoria live in with their 2 kids is lofted as a second/third story villa, and the pool, outdoor kitchen, bar, and TV area below are common use for the guests. They have another villa (3 bedroom) further down the mountain, but since we were the only guests this past week, it was really like a private infinity pool with ocean view. Not too bad. =)

Location is absolutely perfect. You are just north of town off Hwy 34, and the steeper part of the road is paved, which if you've been here before, you know is a bit unusual for anything except the main drives. It's about 3-4 minutes up the hill, but is still high enough to have great views. Took us 5 minutes to get to town, and I never felt like we might fall off the mountain like I did when exploring areas up near Oxygen. We had a 4x4, but it wasn't necessary to get there.

Their house backs up to a preserve and Jason created a great little nature trail that goes down by the river. But you don't have to venture far to see wildlife. I saw white face and howler monkeys on multiple occasions while relaxing by the pool, and there are plenty of toucans, parrots, and other feathered friends flying in the skies.

Jason & Victoria are great and very helpful. They had fresh fruit waiting for us in our rental when we arrived, and were more than happy to help with anything we needed to set up (Victoria even arranged my car rental and recommended agencies/rates). They have been in the area for quite some time and can recommend restaurants, tours, hiking expeditions, and even organic farms if you feel like getting your cooking on. We intend to move to Costa Rica soon, and would definitely stay here again. Thanks guys!
