(The second floor is the owner's living space; each floor is a very private, separate apartment). The house is situated on a quiet residential street, with a large deck on the waterside overlooking the Belfast harbor and Penobscot Bay, with a long view of Blue Hill and Cadillac Mountain (Acadia National Park) on the horizon beyond Islesboro and Castine. From the deck you descend a flight of stairs to a garden terrace which includes a hot water outdoor shower and a hot tub; walk down a winding path through a field of tall grass and wildflowers to a private stair leading to a secluded gravelly beach. (At high tide it is unreachable except by water [and your stairs]; at low tide you can walk along the shore). There is a spacious and comfortable living room with wood-burning parlor stove, a convenient and well-equipped kitchen/dining room, and sliding glass doors opening onto the deck. At the opposite end of the living room you enter the two-level master bedroom suite from which French doors open onto a private balcony and stairs lead down to a cozy family room with a door out to the garden and hot tub. On the other side of the living room is a second bedroom adjoining a half bath. Furniture is all tasteful and comfortable, including a few antiques; there are hardwood floors, oriental rugs, and original fine art on the walls. A wood-burning parlor stove makes the living room delightful in cold weather. Activities and AttractionsThe house is within walking distance of the Belfast waterfront (kayak rentals, sailing, Bay cruises), community theater, art center with classes and workshops; a variety of interesting shops and restaurants, movie theatre; a local produce market and an organic grocery store can all be reached on foot. A major supermarket is a short drive just beyond the downtown center, as is the YMCA with a gym and a walking track, and programs for children. The City Park is less than a mile away, with public tennis courts, a wonderful playground ,outdoor Olympic swimming pool and a shallower “family” pool . From Belfast North you can drive to Searsport in 15 minutes and browse numerous antique shops along the way; then visit the Penobscot Marine Museum. Roughly another hour will get you to Acadia National Park, unless you take a side trip to Blue Hill, Castine, or Deer Isle and Stonington, and see blueberry fields, rocky shores, picturesque harbors and lobster fishing. To the South, drive past Lincolnville Beach (it’s sandy! unlike any other nearby shore) whence the ferry can take you to Islesboro; and on to busy but delightful Camden where you can sign up for Windjammer cruises (though there’s one in Belfast, too), shop and sample a variety of restaurants. In nearby Rockport visit the Maine Center for Contemporary Art, next to the Rockport Opera House (home of Bay Chamber Concerts). About 40 minutes’ drive from Belfast, is Rockland, home of the nationally- recognized Farnsworth Art Museum as well as numerous art galleries, bookshops, antiques, and a movie theater.
