activities and attractions in Steinhatchee Gulf Coast North

Steinhatchee, Florida is a quiet Olde Florida town and is a great area for many recreation sports including boating, fishing, water sports and hunting and is known well for the great scalloping season in the area. In town there is a
playground/park for little ones to enjoy and a short drive to a
pretty park at Steinhatchee Falls on the river with a great picnic
area. Also in town are tennis courts, several marinas and several
great restaurants. And a short drive down the highway are several
natural springs, freshwater fishing, the Suwanee River and various
areas for hunting and outdoor activities. A great place for a true
Olde Florida experience. If you've never been to the area please do research on activities that you
would be interested in and around Steinhatchee and make reservations in advance. This is a slow
paced place and limited availability with charters, rentals, etc. may apply during the busy seasons.

traveler reviews for this steinhatchee house rental

I'm with my friends in the Stein!

sarebear (middleburg, fl)
Review submitted: July 16, 2011   Date of arrival: July 9, 2011

Our trip to Kelber Cottage was a positive experience. We arrived on a (rainy) Friday, we'd already received the code to the door and were told we were welcome at any time that day. When we pulled up we saw the cottage, just as pictured on the websit: a cute, sunny little place with a nice porch and a large, quiet yard. Once inside, we saw that it was actually nicer in person! Everything was neat and clean and did not have a hotel/vacation home feel to it at all. Our next discovery, and this would be the only complaint we had with the place, was that instead of the three beds in three different rooms that we were expecting, there were in fact only two beds (one of the rooms had a full size bed and a twin daybed by the window). The upstairs loft which I assume is the third room mentioned, had only an air mattress to sleep on. I imagine that is due to the spiral staircase, which would make moving furniture up and down rather difficult. This discovery was disheartening since we had a group of three couples and that meant someone was sleeping on the floor. We played a quick game of poker to see who the unlucky couple would be, and then found our rooms. Also, there is only one shower, the two toilets connect into the shower room. This was not really a problem though. We found the location to be nice and central, with a store down the street where time seemed to NOT be of the essence! We were there often and very thankful that it took less than a minute to get there, and we could even walk if needed. Another positive part about the location is that the cottage is practically next door to a nice family of "shuckers" who we brought our haul to twice and even found ourselves stopping by there just to chat. The house has just about everything you need already there, even laundry detergent! We really didn't need to bring much of anything. We were a little worried at one point that the fridge might have been broken as it was not cooling well, but given some time, and less opening of the door, it turned out to be fine. We didn't spend too much time in the house as we were scalloping most of the day, but our time there was more than pleasant and we all agreed we would certainly rent it again. Upon our departure, we were happy to find out there was no set time to be out of the house and no pressure from the owners in any way, we just put the key in the lock box and drove off. I hope this is helpful, I tried to include all the the things I wondered about before arriving.

Owners response: Sara,
We are glad you enjoyed your stay and thanks for the review! Yes, you are correct, the third floor bedroom is impossible to get conventional furniture up to it. We did have 2 twin mattresses up there (we couldn't get the boxsprings up the stairs) and the general consensus was it would be better with a queen size air mattress. I apologize that we have been so busy we forgot to change this on the listing. We do say as much as possible in the listing but some of the options are limited the way the website is set up. The drop down boxes do not allow for certain details in creating the listing but I encourage everyone to read the worded listing thoroughly for details. The home is practically brand new (only 5 years old), we are the first and only owners and I am disturbed that the likewise like-brand-new refrigerator (bought after we purchased the house) would be having issues but it is true, constant opening/holding the door open does not allow for proper cooling. I'm glad to hear the issue was passing.
We appreciate your feedback and hope to have you visit again in the not-so-distant future! Thanks again.

I don't even know where to start with this review of Kelber Cottage. It's a slice of heaven on earth. Kelber Cottage has all the modern amenities for a vacation destination.
It is very evident that the owners take great pride in their cottage. Everything you would need is right there at your finger tips. Fully furnished, bedrooms, baths, liveing room, and especially kitchen.
Steinhatchee itself, is a wonderfull place to go. Be it a small town, no matter where you go, you'll be greeted with nothing but friendliness and hospitality.
Fishing, scalloping, and dineing are literally moments away from the cottage door step. I only have two suggestions if you make a trip to Kelber Cottage. 1.) Purchase some of the local seafood from the (small) but local purveyors in town and have a homemade feast. 2.) Investigate some of the other local sites, (Fanning springs on the Swanee River is great) There is a lot to do in the area, even all be it a small town, trust me, I was amazed with all the activities in the area.
I've stayed there twice now, and both times I have left with a smile on my face, and a bit of a frown.....only reason for the frown...I had to leave.
Plain and simple.....there's no way to go wrong with Kelber Cottage, and Steinhatchee. I can't wait to go back!

The Kelber Cottage has been nothing but excellent for us! My wife and I have rented places in Steinahattchie over the years and this cottage is by far the nicest in town. There is plenty of room for parking your boat, RV etc.. The interior is always immaculant and we have never had an A/C issue. The Fishing is incredible we always catch some large trout and redfish. There are some great guides over there at the Sea Hag Marina. Overall, this cottage is everything they say it is and we are looking forward to booking again as soon as possible.
