vacation rental description

Charming cottage in the heart of quiet Otter Creek -- the only village on Mt. Desert Island completely surrounded by Acadia National Park.  On secluded Grover Ave. with the Park across the road, there is no better location for everything that the Island and Park have to offer.

Bustling Bar Harbor: 4 miles.  Scenic Seal Harbor: 3 miles.  Short walk to the Otter Creek general store, the 5-star Burning Tree Restaurant and a stop for the free Island Explorer shuttle that circles the Island.  The head of Otter Cove (with public ramp) is a stroll down Grover Ave.  A ten minute hike from our front door through the Park takes you to where Otter Cove meets the ocean at the Park Loop Road causeway (8th photo looks back toward where the cottage is located).  Continue from there to Gorham Mtn., Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole.  Easy drives are the Jordan Pond House, Little Hunter's Beach, Day Mountain, Asticou Garden, Thuya Lodge, Sand Beach, Sieur de Monts, many mountain hikes, swimmable lakes and the natural wealth of Acadia and Mt. Desert.

But return to the peaceful haven of our cottage to relax on the screened porch (beautiful morning sun), cook in the fully-equipped kitchen (we like it better than our kitchen in Maryland), enjoy the fire pit at the back of our property and listen to nature.

The house has two bedrooms: one with a queen sized bed, one with a full sized futon.  There is a comfortable living/dining room, kitchen, porch, one bathroom, a room at the end of the house that is perfect for writing or art making, a utility room and a garage for storing bikes or kayaks (no cars).  There is a two-car driveway and a cute front yard full of flowers.

Please bring your own towels and sheets. We supply blankets, pillows and dish towels. For more photos please email and we'll send a link to our personal Maine web page.

traveler reviews for this bar harbor house rental

Typical Maine Cottage

Review submitted: August 7, 2014   Date of arrival: August 3, 2014

This is our third or fourth year renting this lovely cottage. We were campers in Acadia NP before this. We like the convince of the area. Close to Bar Harbor and other towns on the island. The cottage is perfect for the two of us but could accommodate four easily. We love the enclosed in porch and the big kitchen. Every thing you would need for cooking is provided. The lawn is Hugh and chaise lounges are provided. Our typical day is coffee in the the morning on the porch then adventuring out for the day. Many evenings we cook in with lobsters or haddock from Parsons located in Bar Harbor. The remainder of our evening is spent having a fire in the fire ring in the lower part of the yard. The owners are very responsive to any thing you may need. It is a quite and lovely place. We will continue to return here. Forgot to mention that at the top of the road you can get the Island Explorer Bus which we think is free.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, sight seeing

We Left Our Hearts in Otter Creek

Review submitted: April 12, 2012   Date of arrival: July 31, 2011

We've rented this property twice, and can't wait to get back again. The cottage is very quiet, clean, and well-kept, with a cozy bedroom and a great kitchen where we can make all of our meals. The owner is very responsive and has great suggestions for activities in the area. So far, just the two of us have stayed here, but the cottage could definitely accommodate four people comfortably. When we are not out-and-about we spend our days on the screened-in porch, reading, writing or just daydreaming.

The cottage is in Otter Creek and is perfectly situated for hiking in Acadia, driving / biking into Bar Harbor, or exploring Mt Desert Island and points East. Sometimes we drive into Bar Harbor, but the free shuttle that picks you up outside the general store is even easier. Easy walking to general store, Burning Tree (yum - make reservations in advance!), and even a very nice massage therapy practice (make reservations there, too). Star gazers from big cities will be amazed that you can walk out the front door at night and see the Milky Way!

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, sight seeing, romantic getaway

Owners response: This reviewer makes a good point - the house works for active types and restful types alike. And yes, the Burning Tree Restaurant is a must!

Charming indeed!

Review submitted: June 7, 2011   Date of arrival: May 28, 2011

We stayed here for a wonderful week. The house was very charming and comfortably large for a couple who likes to leave games and art projects set up around the house, and still be able to cook. We cooked most of our meals in the very nice kitchen - everything necessary was there. The location pretty much can't be beat - far enough outside Bar Harbor to avoid the crowds, but only about 8 minutes in if you need to go to the Hannaford, grab coffee, or get breakfast (recommendation: Jeannie's). No breathtaking views out the windows, but we liked waking up to the mountain peeking through the trees.

With the futon in the second room, this house would be appropriate for a couple with a kid, two couples who are comfortable sharing fairly close quarters, or two single folks. We were there as just a couple, and it was perfect for a weeklong getaway.

Cheryl was a joy to chat with on the phone, and everything was exactly as she said it would be. I would highly recommend this house to a friend, and may stay there again the next time we're in the area!

Recommended for: sight seeing, romantic getaway

Owners response: This lovely review confirms that others see what I've always thought I saw!
