quick facts

vacation rental description

The Kaweah Cottage and Shangrila Nature Preserve are most appreciated by visitors who want an exceptionally clean and comfortable home with close access to the River and who enjoy truly getting away from it all. Surrounded by thousands of acres of oak woodlands, horse pastures and ancient river pools, this historic homestead offers a place of sanctuary, healing and celebration for the more adventurous lovers of Nature.

It is best suited for independent travelers who take pleasure in preparing their own meals in a gourmet kitchen; who prefer being away from the nearby town with it’s busy highways and tourist crowds; who love vacationing in a wilderness area while nestled in a luxurious, healthy, green-built home that they have all to themselves.

Whether you are a writer or an artist wanting to nurture your creativity, a couple seeking precious time together, or a family with kids of all ages looking to explore Nature and discover nearby Sequoia National Park -- Kaweah Cottage is the perfect place.

We’re located at the end of an unpaved country road on the upper South Fork of the Kaweah River -- far away from typical suburban settings and the usual routines -- and fifteen minutes from the town of Three Rivers and thirty minutes from the main entrance to Sequoia National Park. This is a memorable destination where one can really get away, slow down, and sink into the peace and beauty.

Although the Cottage is equipped with the essential technologies that many of us need to stay connected -- satellite wi-fi, cordless phone, a dvd player, an audiophile sound system -- we invite our guests to spend most of their time unplugged, listening to the sounds from the adjacent Creek, the symphony of wildlife, and the down canyon breezes wafting through the oaks. Being here will change the way you feel.

Here are a few of the favorite features and activities:
Swimming and frolicking along the spectacular and secluded river and creek; hiking and exploring around the 62 acre Shangrila Nature Preserve; full day excursions up to the Sequoias; fine bedding, sheets, and towels; the fully equipped gourmet kitchen; amazingly comfortable bathtub and spacious shower; breathtaking night skies; watching horses graze from the bedroom view deck; exceptional privacy -- turn the music up as loud as you want... whenever you want; roland digital piano; a clean, comfortable, natural place that becomes your home away from home.

I loved this place. My wife loved this place.

It was a beautiful house. Very peaceful and relaxing. The attention to even the smallest details were not overlooked.

But there is nothing that beats waking up in the morning and walking outside. This is a spectacular place! The natural beauty is unsurpassed.

I particularly enjoyed walking across the fields, passing the horses on the way and finding my way to the river. The river is magical. It is filled with enormous boulders that Native Americans had over the centuries used to grind grain and created smooth grinding holes in these huge stone boulders. You not only notice these archaeological relics from centuries past, but you can feel the spirit.... This place is a must visit. I have traveled the world, yet this place has a very special vibe that speaks to ones spirit.

I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough. It is a must for anyone seeking a peaceful yet majestic get away.

Kaweah Cottage is our favorite getaway spot in California. The river slides and pools keep you smiling all day; the cottage is beautiful and peaceful, clean and perfectly-appointed; the big trees are nearby, and many other secret spots that James and Kathleen will point you to; and they are the most generous, informative, and welcoming hosts that you could imagine. Go soon... and have fun!
