Welcome to our world! Our house is on a hillside at 8000 feet overlooking Vallecito Lake. We are at
the end of the road with the San Juan National Forest as our back property line. You can hike to a
beautiful mountain meadow just a mile up from us where the Weminuche Wilderness begins. At 500,000
acres, it is the largest in Colorado, relatively unknown, uncrowded and awesome! Local outfitters
can take you by horseback deep into it on one or multi-day trips. You can also do breakfast rides up
into beautiful Freeman Park just a few miles up from the house. Hourly and 1/2 day rides are also
available from The Big Corral just up the road!
The retreat is what you would hope for in a mountain getaway. It is very secluded, pretty, warm,
cozy and soothing; with wood paneling, aspen T+G vaulted ceilings, and lots of windows to gaze out
at God's handiwork. And of course there's the wraparound deck with gazebo overlooking the lake for
dining, gawking, BBQing, or just hanging out. This is our quite biased opinion: We have lived in
many incredible places and have travelled extensively. Upon retirement we moved here from the Aspen
area and continue to delight in our special find! This is simply the best!! (honest- we really think
so).
Being in the four corners area within several hours we can be in so many exciting places. Here's a
few wonders that we like to visit that are so diverse, yet close at hand: Mesa Verde- we always take
visitors there for the day to see the Anasazi cliff dwellings, only an hour away. Canyonlands
National Park is 3 hrs away in the Moab, Utah area and a whole different world. There's also the
Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge train ride. A vintage steam engine takes you through the Animas River
canyon to the old mining town of Silverton and back. Many visitors consider this a must do day
adventure. If you want whitewater there are many rafting outfitters in Durango that do full or 1/2
day trips on the Animas or Piedra Rivers nearby. They also rent 1 or 2 person inflatable kayaks
(rubber duckies) that you can take by yourself. You really don't need to leave our valley.
The fishing in the lake is great. If you want big trophy fish monster Pike are pulled out every
year. We like to keep the freezer stocked with the Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon that you don't
need to be an expert angler to catch. The road goes all around the lake and there are plenty of good
spots to fish from shore. There's also 2 marinas that rent fishing boats by the hour or day. They
also rent "party barges" so everyone can go! There's also some great hiking trails that are nearby
and easy. You can hike up either Vallecito Creek or the Los Pinos River into the Weminuche which
begins at both trailheads. There are also ATVs for rent to take you up forest roads and trails high
up into the mountains right across the lake!
There are two general stores closeby for groceries, liquor, fishing and hunting licenses, tackle,
etc. There are also a few really cool restaurant/taverns just down the hill. Excellent food
and pure Colorado Mtn. atmosphere!!! If you miss the summer season don't despair!
Sept., Oct. and Nov. are our favorite seasons. Perfect weather, sun abounds and the hills ablaze
autumn color! If you are coming for a family vacation or
for a hunting/fishing/ski/dream/reconnect trip all you need to bring is the desire to be in the
heart of one of the most awesome places there is... and you will find that which ye seek! - Let your
imagination shape your reality, it's easy!!!
To have more pics sent or to speak with Mike or Kari just call. We would love to talk
to you, answer all your questions in person, and help you get psyched about your grand adventure!
Your pets are welcome! (no giraffes or wildebeasts, please)
May all your adventures be sweet, exciting, and survivable! Michael and Kari Shobe
