Because there is no bridge connecting Bald Head Island to the
mainland, visitors and residents must arrive by boat–either passenger
ferry or private yacht. The separation from the mainland is as
psychological as it is geographical. With cars left on the mainland,
the pace of life on Bald Head slows to that of an electric cart, a
leisurely bike ride or a relaxed vacationer’s own easy gait.

While there are activities and events scheduled on the island
throughout the year, you can choose to go days at a stretch without
an appointment to keep. In fact, unless you have a tee time or are
particularly keen to catch the fishing at low tide, time is rarely of
the essence on Bald head Island. With so few times in our lives when
(or places in the world where) we can simply relax and go with the
flow, many visitors take an improvisational approach to vacations
here, allowing the island to take them from one discovery to the
next.

You may start your day with a bike ride, for example, and stop to
visit the grand lady of the forest, an ancient live oak tree, along
the way. Notice the narrow path that leads deeper into the forest and
you're off on a hike that looks and feels more like a setting from
North Carolina's spectacular mountain country. After a picnic under
the canopy of oaks, dogwoods and palms, you might trade your bike for
inline skates and circle the island's wynds and ways. As you glide
past the ocean, you may catch a glimpse of a majestic sailing ship,
shuck your skates for bare feet and venture out onto the sand for a
closer look. Inspired by your mind's eye images of the ship's exotic
port of call, you may decide to create a stately sandcastle,
appropriately adorned with lovely shells you collect as you venture
out to the very edge of the continent-Cape Fear Point.
