Activities and AttractionsMérida invites you to experience the charm and magic of the ancient corners of her Historical Center, linked by wide, tree-lined streets. From the parish of St. Christopher in the east to Santiago in the west; from La Ermita de San Sebastian (the Hermitage of St. Sebastian) in the north to Santa Ana in the south, tour her suburbs with the austere facades of ancient homes, view the variety of traditional occupations, small neighborhood stores, and flower and fruit markets where vendors cry their wares of candied fruits and homemade ices. Mérida will please you with her serenade (concert) in Santa Lucia, with public dances to the sound of a “big band” orchestra, and with her history displayed in the Mejorada, where a magnificent convent dating to the colonial era and a former military fort, which is now open to the public. The Plaza Grande or Main Square, is the central point for all walking tours. Here a wide variety of Merida’s characters meet, demonstrating the intense activity of the cultural capital of the Yucatán Península. City Tours Bus Tours, A bus tour of the city provides visitors with information about Mérida's most important sites outside the center of town, such as the Paseo de Montejo, a boulevard lined by old mansions reminiscent of the French architecture popular at the turn of the century; catholic temples dating to the Colonial Era; and other historical buildings located throughout the city. Tours are given in both Spanish and English, and leave from the Santa Lucia Park (Corner of 55th and 60th St.) Horse-Drawn Carriages A carriage ride through the historic downtown district and along the Paseo de Montejo give the visitor a different perspective of the city. The men at the reins frequently are skilled narrators of different stories of their town, making the tour an unforgettable experience. Archaeology Chichen Itza The majestic Chichen Itza is recognized throughout the world. Every day tourists from all over the globe visit this site, indicating the great curiosity inspired by these archeological remains of the Mayan Civilization. One of the pleasures of getting to know Chichen Itza lies is in the new finds being discovered by archaeologists every day. Iconographic elements, including building platforms, walls, ancient roads (sacbeo'ob in Maya), altars, friezes, stele, columns, lintels, frieze masks and sculptures will satisfy the most demanding expectations of any student of the pre-Hispanic world. Most recent finds include various constructions that were previously hidden. The construction which most identifies and symbolizes Chichen Itza is the Castle of Kukulcan. Its location in the center of the main square, its height, and the stairways on the four sides speaks to its importance. . Also indicating its importance are the stone serpent heads that point to the Sacred Cenote, characterizing its connection with the dominion, government and religion of this legendary Mayan Center. Uxmal The buildings of Uxmal are built in the archeological style known as "Puuc", the name wich means a route traveled by tourists its appreciated worldwide for its unique characteristics:such as monumental buildings, walls and vaulted roofs covered with carved stone, geometric forms, sunken columns, latticework and stone masks of the god Chaac. The cities on the Puuc Route are Uxmal, Kabah, Sayuil, Oxkintok, Chacmultun and Labna. The ancient Maya city of Uxmal is located in the southwest of the Yucatan Peninsula, exactly 78 kilometers from Merida. Some of its most important constructions are the Quadrangle of the Birds, the Quadrangle of the Nuns, and the Governor's Palace. From the top of the tallest building, the Magician's or Wizard's Palace we have a perfect view of the entire zone of México Progreso The Yucatán Península has 360 kilometers of coastline. Just 20 minutes north of Mérida the Port of Progreso welcomes visitors with a warmth that characterizes the people of the Yucatan. Although the main economic activities are fishing, and a commercial port with Customs facilities, as of November of 2001 Progreso will also receive trans-Atlantic ships. The malecon, or beach walk invites the visitor to relax and enjoy the view either from the sand or from one of the many restaurants and bars that line the walk. Progreso is well connected to the rest of the state by various means of transportation. Natural wells Yucatecan life would not be the same without cenotes, natural freshwater springs formed from subterranean rivers. Their clear waters invite the adventurous to submerge their bodies in the cooling depths. However not all waters are crystalline or apt for a dip. Some of these, generally dangerous and difficult to reach, have been reserved by Nature for the wildlife of the area, especially bats. Around and in the city of Merida there are numerous cenotes. One of the most beautiful is Xlacah, an open air cenote found at the archaeological site of Dzibilchaltun. Legends, romances and brave deeds resound from the damp walls of the cenotes hidden from the light of the sun. To visit these cenotes usually found in caves, the tourist must have the services of a guide. It is believed that in ancient times water known as "Zuhuy há", Maya for "virgin water", was drawn from the cenotes to prepare the foods used in certain religious ceremonies such as the Cha chaac, a ritual requesting rain and which required pure water that had not been seen by anybody.
