vacation rental description

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
Homestead on Sugar Island
Sugar maples dominate the forest of this 15-mile-long island in the St. Mary's River. When the sugar maples turn red and yellow in fall color season, a drive around the island is a spectacular experience.

That made it a favorite Indian sugaring spot for many hundreds of years. Many Ojibwa lived here in recent times. The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians bases its tribal membership on being able to trace ancestry to that Sugar Island band.

Cottages and small fishing resorts dominate the island today.

Clydes Drive In is located at the Ferry and there's a cafe and ice cream resturant on the island a short distanc from the ferry. The Hill Top bar with food and drinks is two miles up the hill on 1 1/2 Mile Rd. is known for their Friday fish frys.

Obtain a map from the Sault Chamber of Commerce on Bus. I-75 before going on the island. There's no perimeter road except along the north shore and part of the west shore. A small township park is on the North Shore Road.

Both downbound and upbound shipping lanes are along the west shore, by the Michigan mainland. (Years ago low water levels caused the upbound lane to be moved from the Canadian
side.)

Sugar Island and the St. Mary's River are important migration flyways for many migrating birds. The island is considered a birding hot spot for seeing migratory snowy and great gray owls. The Little Traverse Conservancy has acquired four preserves on Sugar Island, mostly shoreline wetlands of significance to many kinds of wildlife mammals and fish as well as birds. The conservancy states that the habitat of its new preserve on the island's south end is ideal for species including the spruce grouse and black terns (listed as of special concern in Michigan), sedge wren, and long-eared owl. For preserving expanses of natural habitat, it's a plus that the preserve is near large parcels of land owned by the University of Michigan Biological Station, land that was once Governor Chase Osborn's summer home.

For a vacation experience by the woods and water that's close to town, where golfing and casinos are located, consider investigating Sugar Island, especially if you like to fish or boat. We are open from Memorial Day in May through sometime in September.  October, if warm, may also be available.
We are located on the southeast shore, south of Lake George.

Call Bill or Kathy Hutchinson or write to us at P.O. Box 275, Walloon Lake, MI., 49796, and enjoy a week or two at our island view cottages.

traveler reviews for this sault ste marie house rental

Went every summer as a child!

Review submitted: December 12, 2012   Date of arrival: December 13, 2011

Went to the cottage as I called it every summer for a week before school! This place was awesome at the time I was still a little kid and now I am 25 but still wish I could go back every year now that I have my own family. Bill and Kathy are great people we always were doing some art or craft when we were there. The cottages are a nice get away from normal life. I miss it more and more every year!!!!

wonderful get-away

Review submitted: October 10, 2011   Date of arrival: August 20, 2011

This is an ultra-clean, cozy cottage in a very quiet location on a beautiful Island between Sault Ste. Marie and the Canadian side of the St. Mary's River. The owners are super helpful and do everything they can to provide a wonderful vacation spot for you and your family. We had a fire in the fire pit every night that the weather would permit and there were NO mosquitos anywhere! It is within a short distance to the Sault Ste. Marie Locks and the bridge to activities to Canada. I would advise buying the weekly pass for ferry transportation back and forth from the island if you plan to do area sightseeing. The only negative for us was that both beds are only standard double size (that's certainly the only size that the bedrooms would allow for) and we are used to larger sleeping arrangements. Otherwise, it is a wonderful spot and the rental price is very very fair. Enjoy!
