Very nice, but a lot you can't tell from photos

Steve (New York)
Review submitted: January 10, 2012   Date of arrival: September 10, 2011

The house is beautiful, HOWEVER beware of what you can't see... this house is in VERY bad shape for what it is. Again, it's a very beautiful and luxurious mansion, right across the street from the beach, and even more grand and impressive than the photos show. BUT it seems as though the owners haven't maintained this house since the 80's. Paint inside was peeling horribly, stucco outside all chipped, etc. Many many aspects of the home did not work at all during our stay. For example, none of the fountains were actually operational, the pool has a water feature but it did not work, many lights and bulbs were out or just did not work, any of the bathroom luxury features were not operational, etc. At the end of the day, it was still a nice house and is a good price, but I'd probably look for a house that is somewhat maintained.

Owners response: This guest contradicts himself. In the title of the review he says "Very nice, but a lot you can't tell from photos." And later on he says "...even more grand and impressive than the photos show." So which one is it? I am confused. It's nice that this past guest point out that "it's a very beautiful and luxurious mansion, right across the street from the beach, and even more grand and impressive than the photos show." Prior to the guests arrival we experienced tremendous rains which exposed a roof leak. The result of this was evident by peeling paint and stucco. We did not have time to repair the damage before the guests checked in and we certainly were not going to inconvenience them by doing the work during their brief two day stay. It is probably my fault for not explaining the situation to the guests. As for the pool water feature, we disabled it (on the advice of our pool man) because the water level in the pool would become too low because of evaporation and the ocean breeze blowing the spraying water out of the pool. We also disconnected the fountain because past guests preferred not to hear the hum of the motor. These are hardly shortcomings of a stunning vacation home across from the beach. Had the fountains not been present than we would not be getting downgraded due to them not being in use. The light bulbs are checked before all guests arrive. From time to time guests have questions about turning on the lights because there are two sets of switches (on/off switches and dimmer switches) which are not always in the same location in each room. The guests claim that many light bulbs were out is not accurate. If he had brought the situation to my attention I would have explained to him how to operate the lights and if bulbs had burned out than I would have sent my handyman over to change them. The only luxury bathroom feature that was not operational is a towel warmer which is hardly necessary in south Florida.
Lastly, I am glad that the guest mentioned that "it was still a nice house and is a good price" because now that we have completed he repairs it is back to being a 5 STAR PROPERTY.

Hmmm

Marina (Paramus, Nj)
Review submitted: December 8, 2011   Date of arrival: November 27, 2011

What a beautiful house .... it was about 30 years ago. It's so sad to see how this house getting destroyed by the guest and managment doesn't do anything to mantaine this villa in great condition.Kitchen cabinets are so dirty as well as all dishes inside. we didn't want to use anyyhing before washing ourselves. All closets in the bedrooms were not clean at all. And Sauna is not working.
I hope that someone will like this house and will buy it. Those kind of house can not be for RENT

Owners response: Let me begin by saying that 15 former guests have submitted reviews of this property and 14 gave the mansion 5 out of a possible 5 stars (highest rating) while one gave the mansion 4 stars. In fact, a former guest submitted a 5 star review just one week before this review was submitted and she said "The pictures do not do justice to how lovely this property is and how close to the beach you are". This is the first 3 star review that the mansion has ever received. This review was submitted out of spite because the guest wanted a free cleaning 3 days after she checked in (before the rest of her party arrived for Thanksgiving). She was told that there was going to be an additional charge for extra cleanings during her stay, but she refused to pay my cleaning crew. She claims that the sauna doesn't work, but I have used it myself. The kitchen cabinets were clean and so were the dishes. The only valid statement that she made was regarding closets being dirty. Two closets had some dust on the floor because were had just done routine air conditioning maintenance which required the technician to access the attic through openings in the ceiling in two closets. When he climbed up into the attic and back out some dust fell to the closet floor. My cleaning crew was not aware of the situation, but I sent them back to clean the closet floors just after the guests checked in. Wendi and I bend over backwards to meet the needs of our guests. If this guest had valid complaints than she should have voiced them during her stay so that we could have done our best to address and rectify them.
