vacation rental description
The House: 5 Bedroom, 3 Bath, Sleeps 12. Very new to the rental
market and beautifully furnished, Riverwatch is predominantly a
glass structure, exemplifying the architectural philosophy of Frank
Lloyd Wright. Utilizing its form to take full advantage of its
location, bands of glass on both floors provide 360 degree views of
the Absaroka and Gallatin mountain ranges. As it captures the
constantly changing light, Riverwatch is a continuous inspiration
for all who come to the mountains for a retreat.
Location and History:
Located in the heart of the Paradise Valley, Riverwatch is nestled
along the shore of the Yellowstone River, the longest undammed river
in the lower 48 states. The Yellowstone originates at the
Continental Divide in northwestern Wyoming and flows northward
through Yellowstone National Park where it both feeds and drains
Yellowstone Lake, the deepest high elevation lake in North
America. Lured by the mysteries of what is now considered to be
one of the largest thermal areas in the Park, the owners of
Riverwatch came in 1985 to film, study and explore the bottom of
Yellowstone Lake. In 2005, they purchased Riverwatch as a home base
to support future research in Yellowstone.
The home invites you to celebrate the spirit of exploration
with historical photographs of the 1871 Hayden Expedition. 135
years ago, Ferdinand Hayden began his journey into Yellowstone
setting out from Bottlers Ranch, a point just across the river from
where Riverwatch stands today. Together with his painter, Thomas
Moran and his photographer, William H. Jackson, these gifted
explorers inspired Congress to establish Yellowstone as our first
National Park and in 1871 produced the first bathymetric map of
Yellowstone Lake. You will truly appreciate their genius when you
contrast their original map with the 21st century 3D bathymetry map
a team of scientists produced with the owners of Riverwatch. Both
are on display in this wonderful home. Underwater footage, images
of the lake bottom and mapping technology also on display stand in
stark contrast to Haydens lead plumb line and small animal-skin
boat. Working with university and park scientists, the U.S.
Geological Survey, and private not for profit institutions, the
owners continue to explore Yellowstone Lake. Your stay at
Riverwatch continues to support ongoing research in Yellowstone
National Park and many other places around the world.

activities and attractions in Yellowstone Montana
Riverwatch is located in the heart of the Paradise Valley with the
Absoraka mountain range to the east and the Gallatin mountain range
to the west. Livingston is 32 miles to the north, Yellowstone
National Park is 20 miles to the south, and 54 miles to the west is
Bozeman. Although there are other airports in the area, Bozemans
Gallatin Field is the most convenient arrival/departure point for
visiting the Paradise Valley. Reservations for the airline and
rental cars should be made well in advance of your planned visit.
One of the highlights of any visit to Riverwatch is
exploring the wonders of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). In the
spring, summer and fall seasons, hiking, camping, horseback riding,
photography, wildlife viewing, boating and fishing are all great
outdoor activities. In the winter months, Yellowstone is an
entirely different world. Access to the Parks interior at the
northern entrance is via snow coach, snowmobile or cross-country
skiing. Weather permitting, guided daily trips are available to Old
Faithful and Canyon Village. Cross country ski equipment is
available for rent at the Mamouth Hotel. The road to Cooke City is
open to four wheel drive vehicle traffic and offers access to many
trails inside the Park.
The Yellowstone Institute has many wonderful courses that run year-
round and are very modestly priced. These courses are run by
experienced naturalists and scientists who are experts in
Yellowstones natural and cultural history. Courses do require
advance reservations. Also, contact YNP and the Livingston Chamber
of Commerce to receive updated visitor packages.
The Paradise Valley offers National Forest access from many
different locations. Hiking, camping, horseback riding,
photography, wildlife viewing, boating and fishing are also
available here. In addition, because you are not in YNP, there are
numerous companies that offer guided rafting services on the
Yellowstone River. If you like to fish, the Yellowstone River is
100 from your door at Riverwatch. You can bring your own gear or
rent it from one of the many local fishing stores in the area.
There are also a number of professional guides that offer fishing
trips down the river. Montana fishing permits are available at the
Emigrant Store which is located 7 miles north of Riverwatch on
highway 89. While visiting Livingston, you might take the time to
visit the International Fly Fishing Museum.
If you like to soak in hot springs, there are two choices within
easy reach of Riverwatch. Boiling River is just inside the Parks
northern entrance. It is very near the sign that marks the 45th
Parallel and parking is available for access. In addition to this
area, CHICO Hot Springs Resort is just 7 miles north of Riverwatch.
CHICO has 2 spring fed, partially enclosed pools and is a great spot
for both adults and children. They are also open for breakfast,
lunch and dinner so you can do both while you are there. Dinner
reservations are normally required. Livingston and Bozeman are
within reasonable driving distance of Riverwatch. Activities such
as museums, rodeos, shopping and skiing are all well within your
reach. Bridger Bowl and Big Sky are two first class skiing areas
that offer both cross country and downhill trails in the winter.
The train museum in Livingston and the Museum of the Rockies in
Bozeman are well worth the trip and enjoyable for all age groups.
