There’s a certain woody perfume in the forested parts of Sonoma County, perhaps nowhere more evident than in this 4BR/4BA lodge-like home tucked away in a mountain canyon and set among oaks and firs. The trees shield and provide privacy for the gambrel-roofed two-story house, which is a real log house throughout, including portions that have been coated with stucco. The house is set atop a foundation of coarsely textured stones, giving it a rustic look. A veranda, furnished with comfy rattan chairs, runs the length of the front, looking out through oaks toward a canyon road, that even though it’s only minutes from Calistoga, is lightly traveled. There’s also a back porch on the opposite side of the house, just off the kitchen, with inviting chairs and a nice view of the woods. The patio, easily accessed from the kitchen and dining area, is paved in shale and tile. It has a large built-in oak-sheltered grill with a sink and prep area. The view looks down slope into heavy woods. A fence-enclosed pool, trimmed in smooth river stone, has a wood deck that is shaded at one end by two large oaks. This is a lazy, easy-going place, reminiscent of a Sierra cabin but with the bonus of being within minutes some of Wine Country’s best destinations. Exterior Highlights: • Aromatic woods on the periphery • Located minutes from another home, Rancho Viña • Large outdoor grill and food prep area • Wood-fenced swimming pool • Private and quiet The Lodge’s interior features wooden crossbeams, log walls, vertical-slat wood walls and some nicely stucco-finished surfaces. The house divides among several useful and logical spaces – an entertainment room with a plasma TV, couch and leather chair is a great hang-out place and has a view to the woods. The living room built for obvious socializing: two couches, easy chairs, a visually appealing textured carpet and pine floors combine to invite lively conversations. A fire box in one corner warms the room on chilly evenings. The brightly lit kitchen has French doors to the back patio, and four high-backed chairs along its high work counter – the better to chit-chat as you cook. Flanking the kitchen’s abundant work space is a brightly lit dining area with two tables – one seats six; the other three. The dining area has south-facing windows and a sliding glass door to the outdoor grill. A nice private touch is the first-floor bedroom occupying a separate wing. It has an attractive four-poster king bed, sink and wine chiller, skylight, private deck and bathroom. On the second floor has dense carpets and plush area rugs throughout. Of the three bedrooms, the largest has a king bed and sitting area, while the other two have queen beds; one has its own bath with shower. Interior Highlights: • Private, semi-detached first-floor bedroom wing • Bountiful southern light in the kitchen and dining room • AC and WiFi equipped • Separate entertainment room for TV
