Located on Clark Point Road, with views of the harbor, The Napier Cottage is one of the oldest homes
in Southwest Harbor. The original part of the house was built in 1826 by Captain Clark for his
daughter, and features the charm of high ceilings, hardwood floors, and sun-drenched rooms. It has
been lovingly maintained, restored and enhanced over the years. The Cottage is situated on nearly
an acre of land with water views of the harbor, with lovely gardens and landscaping, and even an
area of lawn perfect for croquet. Part of the lawn is fenced in and is an ideal and safe play area
for small children.
Entering the main level of the house through the stained glass door, you will find a living room
with a wood stove on a tiled hearth for those rainy days, and a huge selection of videos and DVDs,
including many appropriate for children. Books of many flavors can be found throughout the house.
The Cottage has a bay-windowed dining room seating 8-10, with French doors opening to a wrap-around
deck, patio and a screened, lighted gazebo. A den/TV room with a TV, a stereo system and VHS/DVD
player provides a gathering place for entertainment.
Also on the main level is a half bath, a washer and dryer, and a kitchen with many pine cupboards.
In the kitchen you will find a refrigerator/freezer with in-door water/icemaker, a glass top stove
and oven, a dishwasher, disposal, a generous selection of cookware, and many gourmet-type
appliances, i.e. Kitchen Aid mixer, bread maker, toaster, juicer, blender, food processor, popcorn
popper, waffle maker, and of course, a lobster pot and tools. There are 12 place settings of
everyday china and glassware, and there are 2 sets of 12 place settings each of nice china as well.
There is silver ware enough for 16 people, and a dozen wine glasses in several sizes.
A grandfather clock in the hall will chime the enchanted hours of your Maine vacation. And for
those who would find it helpful, there is a stair lift to the second floor.
Upstairs in the Napier Cottage are 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. The house can comfortably sleep 6
adults, 2 children and 1 infant, or 8 adults if 2 will use the bunk beds. A crib, high chair and
playpen are available in the house. There is a MBR with a Q bed and private bath with a walk-in
shower. The “Sage Room” bedroom has twin beds and a bay window, the “Poppy Room” bedroom has a
double bed and a built-in window seat, and the “Sunshine Room” bedroom has 2 bunk beds and a crib.
There is also a second full bath with a tub/shower.
The Cottage is furnished with antiques, comfortable and welcoming couches and chairs, and oriental
rugs, and has lots of books, puzzles and games for all ages. There are several sets of linens and
towels for each bedroom, color-coded for each room, and down comforters for those chilly nights.
Computers are made welcome with a DSL connection, and a Satellite dish provides TV and music
reception. There is a 5-disc CD player, a tape player, and complete stereo system in the LR and
another stereo system in the den.
Wandering outside you will find a brick patio, with gas grill and 6-person table with chairs and
umbrella. There is an area of the lawn suitable for croquet--a croquet set is provided. And the
gazebo is a wonderful place for early morning coffee while watching the sun rising over the harbor,
or for a glass of wine in the evening as the sunset highlights the boats, and the moon reflects in
the water.
The Napier Cottage has a circular drive with plenty of parking, and it is an easy walk to the Upper
and Lower town docks, 2 lobster pounds, and the market, restaurants and stores in downtown SW
Harbor. It is also within 1/2 block of two stops of the Island Explorer, the free bus which will
take you anywhere around the island. The Explorer will drop you off throughout the park and island
for your first exploration and pick you up to take you to your next adventure. Some of the buses
also have bike racks.
The services of the Quietside Concierge are an extra benefit provided to guests of The Napier
Cottage. The QC will stock the refrigerator and pantry prior to your arrival, using your list and
funds, make reservations for dinner, theater or a boat ride, run errands, pick up flowers, or
groceries, answer questions, bake cookies, and cater meals with advance notice. There is a charge
for the ingredients, preparation and service for catered meals, and for gas for off-island errands
and trips. Otherwise, the QC services are free to Napier Cottage guests, and are provided by the
owner who resides elsewhere on the premises.
Hiking, biking, swimming in either the ocean or freshwater lakes, fly-fishing, bird watching,
sailing, museums, galleries, concerts, live theater, movies, canoeing, kayaking, festivals and races
of all kinds are avialable in Southwest Harbor, other towns on Mount Desert Island, and in Acadia
National Park.
