vacation rental description

'Serendipity' is a 5min drive from the best beach and the Four Seasons resort with its tennis courts and beautiful 18-hole golf course. There are many restaurants and beach bars nearby, elegant old plantation houses to visit and the quaint little 18th Century capital, Charlestown.

Take a tour up mighty 3232ft Mount Nevis, which towers behind 'Serendipity', or relax by the pool or on the beach, and relish the slow, dreamy pace of life in Nevis - a miniature paradise just 6 miles long by 6 miles wide, with a balmy climate, cool breezes, calm seas, lovely beaches, colourful forests, shady walks, horse riding, and the nicest, friendliest people you could ever hope to meet, people who wave and smile as you drive by.

Each golden day is like a time-warp back to the 1950s, where people are polite and there are no flashy nightclubs, casinos or rowdy tourists, just a quiet little haven.

When you arrive you'll be met by our agent, who will take you up to the house, give you our 21-page guide to the house, island, beaches, restaurants, shops and sports, and help with any problems during your stay.

'Serendipity' nestles quietly amid palm and mango trees 400ft up the jungly side of Mount Nevis, yet it's only a 10-minute drive to the quaint little 18th Century capital, Charlestown. The house sleeps 4 and has 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, shower room, spacious living room, fully equipped modern kitchen, study, laundry, and a wide, protected veranda beside a 30ft x 15ft pool with a glorious view across the pretty garden and 2 miles of sparkly Caribbean Sea towards the sunset and Nevis's sister island, St Kitts.

There is air conditioning in both bedrooms, cable TV in the living room and main bedroom, a DVD player, DVD disks, dozens of books, broadband internet, WiFi, big ice-making fridge/freezer, large gas cooker, microwave oven, dishwasher, coffee machine, juicer and toaster.

As for Nevis itself, it still deserves its old nickname, 'The Queen of the Caribbees'

The house stands in an acre of land well away from the few other houses at Fern Hill Estates, a small hamlet of 30 stylish modern houses, most on 1-acre plots and all with swimming pools and colourful tropical gardens,.A 5-minute drive away is Pinney's Beach, a long, wide stretch of white sand that is often completely deserted even in the high season except for the plummeting pelicans and a fishing boat or two

.

Pinney's is home to seven simple little open-air bistros (including the famous Sunshine's Bar) as well as a smart French restaurant, the Coconut Grove, and a luxurious Four Seasons resort with three restaurants, a huge white beach, calm, protected ocean swimming, two pools, tennis courts, shops, a spa, and an immaculate 18-hole Robert Trent Jones golf course.

Nevis's capital, Charlestown, is a charming little village with buildings dating from the 17th and 18th Centuries, among them the old Bath Hotel, now the main government offices, which was the height of luxury in the 18th Century and a mecca for European tourists, among them the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who sailed the Atlantic to bathe in the hot springs which are still open to the public at Bath village.

Charlestown has two museums: one commemorating Admiral Horatio Nelson, who married a pretty young local widow, Fanny Nisbet, here in 1787; the other the 1757 birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, who was to emigrate to the United States when he was 15 and became one of the USA's founding fathers and its first Secretary of the Treasury.

Among the many delights of Nevis are the Great Houses of the old sugar plantations, some of them in ruins, others now elegant, picturesque hotels: the Montpelier, the Hermitage and the Nisbet. There is a beautiful botanical garden and the island is perfect for lovers of walking, hiking, horse riding, sailing, fishing, scuba diving and water skiing.

And Nevis is suffused with music: the bouncy reggae and calypso rhythms that waft from balconies all over Charlestown; the echoing steel pan bands; the traditional string bands that play simple, haunting melodies on their homemade instruments; the Tuesday night guitar-and-drums jam session at the Oualie Beach Hotel, where everyone is encouraged to join in, if only to shake the maraccas or tambourine; the karaoke evenings at several beach bars; the fabulous local rock and reggae bands.

At times, in fact, it seems that Nevis must have been the original musical, magical island that inspired Shakespeare to write The Tempest: 'If music be the food of love, play on.'

Three or four small airlines fly in to Nevis direct from Puerto Rico, Antigua and St Maarten, but American, Delta, US Airways, British Airways, and several charter airlines have direct flights from the US and UK to St Kitts, after which you take a half-hour car ferry, passenger ferry or water taxi ride across the sea to Nevis.

And as you approach the island by sea in the early evening, unforgettably beautiful in the dusk, it will haunt you for ever.

Third time at Serendipity is still charming

Review submitted: August 24, 2014   Date of arrival: August 9, 2014

Nevis is still our favorite getaway vacation and Serendipity is always the right choice. Last time we were in the pool and hanging out on the veranda the whole week - this year we actually made it to the beach a couple of times. The villa is so well set up and views are so perfect you really don't want to leave. We didn’t even have any of the neighbors around this year, unless you count the monkeys and goats. Graham really has the grounds looking fabulous and my wife took advantage, cutting fresh flowers for the table. The place is extremely comfortable and relaxing.
We flew into the St. Kitts airport, and used Sea Moss taxi down to Reggae Beach with Captain Coby as our water taxi over to Oualie Beach on Nevis. There is a ferry from Basseterre to Charlestown, but its schedule is not the most reliable. We have used Mervin for our rental “Jeep” on Nevis each time & he is a pleasure to deal with.
After vacationing on Nevis since 2008, it’s really nice to see the place thriving. There are at least five charming grocery stores with a big new IGA and club cards for the stores at the villa. For getting out, Sunshine’s is always a favorite of ours for their Killer Bee’s and hanging out. Golden Rock is one of the most stunning places around since it’s been finished – definitely worth the trip, even for just a drink. Oualie Beach Resort had a great band on Wednesday night and we had a couple of perfect sunny days using their beach loungers and umbrellas – just by a drink, is all they ask. Double Deuce has fun ping-pong and pool tables and is the place to be Thursday for Karaoke night – hello to Nambo. Friday night is ruled by Lime with a fabulous live band and party.
Certainly hope to be back to Serendipity a forth time!

Our 2014 Vacation on Nevis

Review submitted: July 25, 2014   Date of arrival: July 8, 2014

We found Serendipity exactly as described including photos of the property and amenities.
The owner was always contactable and very helpful in providing local information on all aspects concerning our stay on the island. Our reasons for choosing Serendipity were for a peaceful, tranquil, and laid back vacation in beautiful surroundings. We were not disappointed. We will be returning in early 2015 for more of the same!

Memorable Getaway

Review submitted: May 30, 2014   Date of arrival: May 6, 2014

My husband and I recently returned from our vacation in the beautiful Caribbean Island of Nevis, where we had the pleasure of staying at this lovely home. The photos on the travel site were quite accurate in reflecting the property's appearance and ammenities, however, it is still more breathtaking to personally take in all the scenery, landscape, views of the ocean and the rainforest surrounding the home. During our visit, we were in contact with the owners through the internet service, who provided us with updates on activities for the week during our stay. The owners also provided us with a full detailed summary booklet with recommendations for restaurants, grocery stores and beaches on the island, which was extremely helpful. The property is immaculate and very well maintained. We were so comfortable and pleased that we had decided on renting this property. The owners also gave us contact information for our car rental, which we prearranged prior to our arrival in Nevis. This holiday is one we will certainly remember and would look forward to considering in the future. We would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative. Most mornings we had breakfast in the verandah . We really enjoyed trying the restaurants listed in the booklet supplied to us. Fabulous mouthwatering juicy burgers at Double Deuce, lobster sandwiches at Sunshines, Mahi Mahi at Lime Bar, fish and chips at the beach restaurant at Nisbett Plantation, fresh lobster at the Yachtsman....and so on. On our last day, we booked an ATV trip with the Funky Monkey, which was very enjoyable. My husband who had been doing all the driving had a chance to see sights without having to concentrate on driving on the opposite side of the road (in Canada we drive on the right side!). We were taken on some back roads and saw some very historical sights.
