Fun in the Sun

Review submitted: December 17, 2013   Date of arrival: August 31, 2013

This was the perfect place and location. All the details were handled in a timely, professional manner. The customer service was great from my first call all the way through my entire trip. The house was charming, clean, well-maintained and dog friendly. The decor with an open floor plan was very inviting and warm. We enjoyed the big kitchen, reading on the front porch, the long walks on the beach and the dog park was beautiful. It was a romantic vacation for us. A block away from the beach, Lake Michigan and kite boarding. We had a blast, the weather was great and the water was perfect.

The owners were top notch and very thoughtful, providing excellent customer service which made our vacation so enjoyable. The location is ideal and the house had everything that we needed for a relaxing, peaceful week. We really enjoyed the sunsets, being right by the beach and the water was perfect. The Lake House for dinner and breakfast was fantastic. I have rented homes for years and this is a special place. I would highly recommend The Little Red Cottage.

Doggie paradise

Review submitted: August 26, 2013   Date of arrival: August 16, 2013

My wife, dog Maggie and I spent a week in August at the Little Red Cottage. This is a quaint cottage that is well looked after. We were able to go out the door each morning to walk Maggie on a paved trail through the woods that was only a couple of minutes away. While on our walk it was very common to see deer watching us through the trees or often cross the trail before us. Every day we drove five minutes to the doggie beach...part of one of the best beaches we have ever seen....dunes and white sand!! This beach is kept very clean,in fact our daughter and friend visited us for a couple of days and preferred the dog beach to"hang out" on.Maggie ran to her hearts content for hours every day...playing with other dogs at times..but more often choosing to swim repeatedly after her toy in the clear waters of Lake Michigan.
We toured the area, had lunches at various Marinas, particularly Dockers that was only 5 minutes away, visited Grand Haven and Holland plus the local farmers market. At night we sat in the quiet back yard, enjoyed a glass of wine and toasted another great day.We barb-b-cued our supper and /or made a fire to toast marshmallows and to relax for the evening.
The owners of the cottage were very helpful when we needed assistance as you may when you're far from home.We only had to contact them twice over minor matters in the first couple of days and both times they helped us immediately. They were friendly and generous.I would definitely recommend the Little Red cottage to couples, small families and/or pet owners. Herm ...Cambridge Ontario

Positives and negatives

Review submitted: August 5, 2013   Date of arrival: July 27, 2013

If you are a dog lover, you will like it. They provide dog sheets and towels, leashes, bowl, and a large collection of an interesting dog magazine. The nearby dog beach is a lot of fun. Most people take their dogs off their leashes. I do not recommend that if your dog is not accustomed to being off the leash. We found another nearby dog beach with a long ramp leading from the parking lot down to the beach. This one is less crowded. There's a little store at the bottom of the hill from the house called Latitudes. They have freshly made food there each day (mac & cheese, deviled eggs, and the clerks are very friendly. The cabin was clean, the bed were comfy, the kitchen is well equipped with all you will need for cooking and baking.
Now the negatives. The nearby restaurants are fair at best. The exception is Handsome Henry's, which has great ribs. If you are not familiar with the area, be careful when looking for restaurants and stores, as it is easy to cross the line into a very bad area of Muskegon. By bad, I mean scary. We couldn't get a single tv station to come in, and there is no WiFi. They did not provide enough towels for one week, so we did many loads of laundry. Ditto with the toilet paper (I called the owner about that, and he brought some over). We parked in the back so our dog wouldn't have to climb the stairs in front (they should provide directions on how to get to the back; it is not accessible from the front of the house). Many times we couldn't get out, due to a neighbor parking cars along the narrow public access. I don't know what a previous reviewer was talking about when he mentioned the great landscaping. That was one of the first things I noticed. It is not kept up. It wouldn't take much to plant some grass seed and some flowers. The basement appears to have a chronic back-up problem. We found toilet paper down by the laundry, as if the drain had overflowed, then receded back down. Since there are large fans & a dehumidifier down there, I imagine this happens all the time. Not sanitary. After making a request the night before our departure to have an extra hour to check out, we were greeted with a terse message from the property manager to "get OUTTA there by 10 at the latest", and to strip the beds, do the dishes, and run the dishwasher to help out the cleaning crew. Considering there are many other rentals along Lake Michigan, next time we will choose one where our business is appreciated, and the customer comes first.

Owners response: We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at our cottage. Our area is a wonderful place to be with its beautiful beaches and friendly atmosphere. We try to make it pleasant for our dog friends, too! I'm sorry we were unable to accommodate your request for an extra hour to check out. We can tell from your many phone calls that you were upset. We are dedicated to making our cottage clean and comfortable for all our guests and it takes that amount of time to do so. We discovered the problem that you mentioned with the basement while we were cleaning after you and all your guests left. I'm sorry you didn't mention anything during your stay; we would have gladly taken care of it at that time. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our cottage and grounds and are truly sorry you did not find things to your liking. We do hope you visit the area again as it is a wonderful, safe place to enjoy.
