Malibu, California has a reputation as big as the Pacific Ocean. An
area made famous by the surfing community and the super wealthy,
beaches and a relaxed lifestyle reign supreme on Malibu's 21 miles of
coastline. Malibu was destined for surfing fame. The area's first
inhabitants, the Chumash Indians, gave the area the name "Humaliwo",
which means "surf that sounds loudly". Hollywood discovered Malibu in
the 1930s, when a number of studios purchased property in order to
film movie and television productions. The area exploded in the 1950s
when a series of Gidget movies used Malibu's beaches as a backdrop
for fun in the sun. Today, people still come to Malibu for the
beaches, as well as the canyons, mountains, and valleys that offer
endless outdoor entertainment. A day in Malibu can include hiking,
surfing, swimming, fishing, horseback riding, or plopping down a
towel and working on your tan.
Before heading out in the Pacific sun, how about exploring the
Adamson House, a National Historic Site, located within Malibu Lagoon
State Park. Built in 1929, the house is an excellent example of
Spanish revivalist architecture. The house is full of period
furnishings and artistic relics commemorating Malibu's past. One of
the most popular features of the house is the extensive ceramic tile
that adorns various parts of the house. The famous tiles were
produced by the now defunct Malibu Potteries from the red clay found
in the area. Beside the Adamson House is the Malibu Lagoon Museum,
which takes visitors on a historical journey of Malibu's inhabitants.
There are displays about the Native American Chumash Indian tribe,
the local ranchers that worked the land, and even the surf community
that brought Malibu to more modern prominence.
Malibu has long been synonymous with fun in the sun. The coastline is
dotted with beautiful beaches offering an endless array of active
pursuits. One of the most popular beaches is Surfrider Beach, the
king of all surfing beaches in the 50s and 60s. This is the only
beach in Orange County designated as a surfer only beach. Serious
wave riders only please, or those who want to watch the show. You can
also have some play time at Leo Carillo State Beach, which has over a
mile and a half of sandy coastline. Swimming, wind surfing, and surf
fishing are all popular pastimes. Due to an intricate reef system
just offshore, this is also a great spot for trying out your scuba or
snorkeling gear. Families flock to Zuma Beach, just up the coast, for
the excellent swimming and boogie boarding. Surfers must look
elsewhere, however, as this is a non-surfing beach.
Malibu is conveniently located for exploring other southern
California attractions. The most obvious choice is Los Angeles, a
mere half hour away. Start your LA experience with a trip to the
Griffith Observatory, located in Griffith Park. One of the most
famous of the city's attractions, the observatory offers incredible
views of the surrounding area. A great day of hiking in the park,
followed by seeing the Los Angeles skyline twinkling all around,
should be a part of every LA itinerary. Head downtown to Hollywood,
the center of the city's entertainment community. Take a stroll along
Hollywood Boulevard, between Gower Street and La Brea, and see all
the celebrities enshrined in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And true
movie buffs will want to visit the excellent film memorabilia stores
lining the street. Shoppers will want to make a beeline for Rodeo
Drive. This street is a Mecca for those who have money to spend and
upscale taste.
Malibu is the perfect place for a southern California vacation. Hike
the trails around Malibu Creek State Park, an area once used for the
filming of M*A*S*H. Relax with your favorite drink as you watch the
sun set into the Pacific at one of Malibu's seaside restaurants. Head
into the hills for a scenic drive in Topanga Canyon or on Mulholland
Drive. Ride the carousel or do some people watching on the Santa
Monica Pier. Take a day and head out to Santa Catalina Island.
Affluence abounds in Malibu, but at its core it is a relaxed, seaside
community that has everything one could ask for to enjoy an endless
summer in the Pacific sun!
