Wi-Fi? I do not think it means what you think...

Review submitted: August 21, 2013   Date of arrival: August 15, 2013

This is a gorgeous wood-paneled, spotlessly cleaned apartment with all the furnishings you could need for a week (or more) stay. Coffee maker, pots, pans, microwave, dishes, all kinds of utensils, towels, all kinds of cleaning stuff, available for your use. Canoe, kayak, charcoal grill, fire-pit, deck furniture, all great and ready for your use. (Bring your own life preservers though if you need them, they only had one.) The pond was gorgeous and clear. You could see huge fish swimming around. Plenty to do close by, Oxford Casino, Oxford Speedway, less than ten minutes away. Freeport just about an hour's drive.

"New beautifully furnished second story retreat" means garage walk-up apartment and "retired owners who live next door" means the people who own and live in the house next to the garage. By "TV and DVD player", they mean TV and VCR (yes, VHS Tapes, of which a varied and decent selection is provided). There are about 5 channels on the TV, CBS being the only big network one. By "Wi-Fi access if you have Verizon" they mean, NO WIFI ACCESS and no cell signal for most phones either. If you are using a GPS and it it telling you to enter Old County Road from any road other than Rabbit Valley Road, DO NOT LISTEN TO IT. The only way in is from Rabbit Valley Road, the other ways have been blocked off.

Up-front payment is required, by cash or check only, they do not accept PayPal, credit or debit cards. The lack of any kind of connectivity was supremely inconvenient for two IT professionals who needed to be "on call" for work emergencies. Nomad Cafe, in nearby Norway, was a good spot to check email. I would not stay there again, because though the loft itself was great (once we got over it being a garage apartment) and the location conducive to a relaxing vacation, it was not restful at all to worry about whether or not work, family or friends were trying to get ahold of us.

Recommended for: families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway

Owners response: The error regarding the DVD player has been changed to correctly show VCR. There are 5 television channels to include CBS,NBC , PBS and FOX there are 2 others that are temperamental including ABC. Previously the ad stated that Wi-Fi was available if you had a Verizon Broad Band Jetpak, this has now been deleted to avoid future confusion. My Verizon cell phone is my only phone and works just fine here. The rental is on the second poor as stated in the ad. The first floor does have garage doors but is only a storage area during the rental season. No vehicles are in that area and there is no movement of the doors while the building is occupied. The ad reads that you should bring you own life jackets if they are necessary.

The perfect place for a getaway vacation!

Review submitted: August 24, 2011   Date of arrival: August 6, 2011

My boyfriend and I had such a perfect time at the Eagle's Nest! It is definitely a place that you want to go, to get away, take in some activities and enjoy good hikes. The cabin is in a perfect location. You can pretty much spend your days on the pond (paddle-boating, canoeing, swimming, jumping off the dock, catching some sun..), or break the days up. We ended up going site-seeing in the mornings and then heading back to the cabin for the afternoon to go swimming and such. Carol and Larry are great people to rent from. They go out of their way to make you feel at home. Larry provided us with a map for our hiking needs. We would rent the Eagle's Nest again in a heartbeat. We definitely hope to return!

Some things that we did during our week in Oxford:

- Portland Seadogs game
- Kayaking on Long Lake
- Downtown Portland (shops/bars/restaurants)
- North Conway shops/restaurants
- Hiked Streaked Mountain
- Maine Wildlife Park
- Saw Lenny, the Chocolate Moose
- Miniature Golf

Recommended for: age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, sight seeing, romantic getaway
