Late 1940's House-Completely renovated in 2005 using traditional hand
painted tile accents, and architectural designs of Old Colonial
Mexico. All new electrical, plumbing, paint, rennovated stairway to
3rd floor balcony and the Terrace there, New bathrooms and completely
New kitchen. The home sits less than a half a block from the beach
access and within a 15 minute walk to the downtown beachfront with a
variety of open-air restaurants overlooking the gulf. On the third
floor terrace in the house you experience a spectacular view of the
Sea, Progreso's longest pier in the world, and glorious sunsets.
The Neighborhood:
Our house is located about one mile to the East of downtown. The East
side is preferable to the West due to the quiet beach road with a
view of the Gulf when walking to and from town. If you like walking,
you can accomplish most of your errands, find good restaurants, etc.
Our properties location is preferable to most of the beach houses in
Chixulub (the next closest town to Progreso), as most of the houses
there are apart from the neighborhoods, and a car is required to do
almost anything.
Within just a block or two our neighborhood has a Laundromat, corner
store, beer mart, an Internet Café, a late night Pizza and Taco
restaurant, and a bed and breakfast that offers outdoor patio
breakfasts. Purified water is also available in 10 Gallon bottles
from the neighbor next door. These fit into our Water Dispenser.
Cost:about $3.00 U.S. per 10 gal.
In Progreso you will find: great restaurants, many of them seaside, a
large supermarket and an outdoor market with local produce, all
within a short walk from the house. Other services include hospitals
and pharmacies, a police station, currency exchange offices,
telegraph and post offices, a bus station, and of course plenty of
taxis to help you get around. Buses run direct to Merida every 15
minutes.
About Progreso:
If you want a place like Cancun, full of American tourists, American
restaurants and just like the USA, Progreso is not it. (Although in
Merida, 30 minutes away from Progreso, you can find American food,
Home Depot etc. if needed.) If you want an experience of authentic
Mexican culture amidst friendly locals, Progreso is the place. Mostly
Spanish is spoken here and if you want to learn, it is a great place
to do it.
When traveling to Progreso, you can go ahead and throw out any pre-
conceived notions of the flashy, busied, touristy presence of most
resort towns in Mexico. You will be pleasantly surprised to find that
you are immersed in a community of friendly, helpful, and generally
more serene locals. You will almost immediately notice a feeling of
being welcome and safe amongst the local people. This is true of most
of the Yucatan, as its roots are founded by the legacy of the Mayan
culture. For day trips there are many options: Exotic ruins and
locales, Cave exploration, Flamingo nesting, trips to Historic Merida
and many more, offering an almost limitless variety of activities for
the adventurous traveler.
