Unresponsive owner when problems arose

The house itself has a nice large open plan that is good for entertaining and we were so excited about staying here. That excitement ended less than 24 hours of our being there. We ended up having a miserable experience. We woke up the first morning there to find out that we had been burglarized. (Yes, we were all in the house sleeping while it was burglarized) The thieves stole all of our computer equipment (including iPads, touches, etc..) as well as two handbags, wallets and car keys. So we spent most of our first full day there filing the police report, calling Credit card companies, the bank, etc.. Thankfully we had some friends coming from LA to spend the weekend elsewhere in Palm Springs and were able to bring us a spare set of car keys. Otherwise we would have had a major problem with that! The only thing stolen from the house was one TV. Everything else was our property. I texted and called the owner who had informed me the prior day that he would not be available all of that day. (Weird) Anyway, when he finally calls me back that night he never even asked if we were all ok. All he could say was that it was weird that it happened, never happened before and then asked if we locked all of the doors. (We did of course and the police confirmed that the burglars popped the locks on two doors). We have had numerous discussions with the owner about submitting this to his homeowners insurance and although he agreed, he has failed to give us any information on what he needs from us to do so and it is now over a month since this happened.

We also had to dispute the rental charge with the bank as the owner did not return our security deposit. It was only after contacting the bank that he credited money back, but he shorted us by $80. I emailed him a few days ago to inquire about this as well as ask again about the insurance claim issue and now his emails are coming back as undeliverable.

I can tell you that if I was renting out a house and I had tenants who were robbed of thousands of dollars in property, I would have done everything in my power to make sure they were ok and well taken care of. This guy is not that person at all. Save yourself the troubles we had and rent from someone who cares more. If he is this unresponsive and uncaring about this big of an issue, imagine how he handles smaller ones!
