vacation rental description

Our three year old white villa, in the authentic Yucatan fishing village of Telchac Puerto, is designed by an architect to maximize the views of a glittering blue ocean, and allow sea breezes to circulate. The house and its furnishings are designed with your comfort in mind; en suite Mexican tile finished bathrooms, outdoor barbecue, eating and relaxing areas, comfortable lounge with TV and DVD and library, fully equipped kitchen and dining room. It is decorated with art from our travels in Mexico, Haiti and South America.

The villa has two bedrooms and can accommodate 4-6 people. Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom and balcony; the master bedroom terrace has a spectacular ocean view – you can sometimes see rays and dolphins swimming; you will often see flamingos in summer. Downstairs, an open plan dining area and lounge look out onto an outdoor covered terrace, adjacent to our charcoal barbecue, where you can grill with an ocean view. The fully equipped kitchen and patio utilities area are towards the back of the house. When you have had enough of the beach and pool, you can retreat to our cozy lounge with sofa and watch Canadian satellite TV or a DVD from our library of mainly English language movies, or browse the internet on our fast connection.

A long white sandy beach, that is almost deserted for most of the year, is just steps down from our terrace. You can walk for miles collecting sea shells and watching pelicans dive for fish. You will meet a handful of fishermen and one or two foreigners – otherwise, you will usually have the beach to yourself.

Yet the busier port town of Progreso, with its shops, supermarkets and American hospital, is just a 25 minute drive. The white colonial city of Merida, with its nightly outdoor folkloric dance presentations, broad range of restaurants and shopping, including Costco, Sam’s Club and Walmart, is 50 minutes from Telchac on well maintained roads.

activities and attractions in Telchac Puerto Yucatan

Telchac Puerto is located in an environmentally protected area north east of Merida.  The region is known for its Mayan ruins and pyramids, handicraft production (particularly hammocks, papier mache models and guayabera shirts), a biosphere reserve that is home to thousands of pink flamingos, and a vast network of underground rivers and cool freshwater cenote pools that make for spectacular snorkelling and diving.   All are within easy reach of the villa.

This unspoiled fishing village is 50 minutes away from the white city
of Merida, a cultural centre with its colonial architecture, museums, art galleries, modern shopping malls, supermarkets and cinemas. Merida has branches of North American stores including Costco, Home Depot, Sam's Club, Wal
Mart and Sears.

In the evenings, the city comes alive with free open air traditional music and dance concerts in the public plazas. You can taste the local homemade exotic fruit sorbets and icecreams, take a ride in a horse-drawn buggy, or simply sit in one of the imposing and historic squares and watch the yucatecos take their evening stroll.  Or, if you prefer, you can eat Chinese food, catch a movie in English, and stop by at Burger King for a milkshake on your way home!

Telchac is also less than two hours away from the spectacular pyramids
of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, which have been recognised as UNESCO sites.  The ruins of the Mayan village Xcambo are ten minutes away, and Dzibilchaltun, with its ruins and cenote sunken pools are a 30 minute drive.  Telchac Puerto  is also less than two hours from the colonial cities of Izamal and Tizimin, each important Yucatan historic centres with colonial architecture, museums, handicrafts and lively markets.  Izamal has a spectacular colonial convent, once host to a historic meeting between Pope John Paul II and the region's Mayan Indians, the city is also known for its production of beautiful papier mache butterflies and flamingoes.

The area is also dotted with restored 19th century haciendas, including Yaxcopoil,  important relics of the Yucatan's status as the world's main sisal producer.  (Sisal is the sinewy fabric still used to produce hammocks.)  Many haciendas, former plantations, now have  first class restaurants where you can taste traditional Yucatecan cuisine in a historic setting.

If you rent our villa, you can spend your time visiting the Mayan ruins and the colonial city, bird-watching in the biosphere marshes, snorkelling among the tropical fish in shallow clear waters, or you can just relax sipping margaritas in the hammock on our beachfront terrace.

To get to Telchac: Fly to Merida International Airport, then it is a 45 minute drive. Or you can fly to Cancun, and either take a luxury air-conditioned bus to Merida, or drive the approximately 4 hour drive to Telchac. There is a bus service to Telchac Puerto from Merida and from Progreso, but we recommend renting a car.

Review submitted: August 6, 2011   Date of arrival: July 16, 2011

Hello Mary,

We had a great time at your villa. The only thing we were not happy about is that we could not find a thinpeeler, That is why we left one.
Just joking. Really it was wonderful and exact as promised by the pictures. Just those picture perfect sunsets every day was getting boring.

Thanks again for the service and we will gladly tell everybody about your great house.

Paradise!

Stella (La Crescenta, California, USA)
Review submitted: July 15, 2011   Date of arrival: June 30, 2011

From the moment my sister and I stepped up to your beautiful villa on our first day, we knew we were in Paradise! Your house was beautifully built, immaculate and furnished with all the decor and amenities that make a vacationer instantly feel at home. We said to each other many times, "I could live here!" The kitchen was really nice and comfortable to cook in, equipped with everything from corkscrews to cutting boards to beautiful dishes. The bedrooms were serene, and the beds completely comfortable! In general, you seemed to have had every detail of comfort and luxury in mind for your visitors!
The outside was just as much of a treat--the sparkling pool and comfortable patio, with the sand and ocean just beyond the back gate!
We spent a good part of the time birdwatching and collecting shells along the beach, or just relaxing around the pool. One of the locals sold us coconuts from his yard so we had a fresh supply of coconut water and delicious meat of the coconut most mornings. We walked around town and all the merchants we talked to seemed very gentle and helpful. We did a couple of excursions--the mangrove tour in nearby San Crisanto, which had a crystal-clear cenote (sinkhole) that we were able to swim in. Also we visited the nearby Mayan ruins in Xcambo and another boat tour in nearby lagoons for
more birdwatching.
It was always such a treat to come back to Villa Isla Negra after an outing. It is such a quiet, peaceful place and we hated to leave! Thank you so much, Mary, Gary and Ivonne, for making our vacation the very best we ever had!

Your home is the best we've rented in many years

Review submitted: June 28, 2011   Date of arrival: June 20, 2011

I just wanted to thank you for making your beautiful home in Telchac Puerto available to us. We just got back to Cancún and my friends and I , and Max had an absolutely fantastic time, due in large part to your incredible property. You're home is incredibly warm and welcoming, the best we've rented in several years of renting through VRBO. We've always had great experiences but this surpassed them all.

We spent quite a bit of time in the pool, in the sea and looking out over the sea from your upper patio. It was a very pleasant surprise to see all the flamingos flying back and forth. In fact for the first few days we didn't even leave the villa, except to run to the store.

As I promised we took great care of your home. It must take a great leap of faith to allow strangers to enjoy your special place in paradise, so I appreciate that. The villa was absolutely beautiful and clean when we got there, your manager seems to do a great job, she was attentive and easy to work with.

Sorry this mail is so long, I just wanted to thank you again for allowing us to stay in your home, I'm sure you can't wait to get down to enjoy it. Hopefully, we'll be able to stay there again soon.

thanks again,
Steven
