I am not sure what previous renters expected, but this is exactly what we had in mind. A house in the mountains that is rustic only adds to that experience of being in the mountains. It offers a dishwasher, washer/dryer and other luxuries that I would not have expected, but it was a nice to have. The only reason it gets 4 stars and not 5 was because the Hot Tub was still being repaired. The kitchen was so well equipped we wanted to cook all the time - we didn't try the massive frying pan - though very tempted to. I loved that there is a full grill, especially since the house sleeps so many, it makes cooking very easy.

So if you are looking for a modern house, with a glass ceiling and eclectic furniture you will be disappointed. But if you are truly looking for a 'home' outside of the city - this is definitely a great house.

Recommended for: adventure seekers, families with young children, families with teenagers

Don't rent without seeing first

This place is not what they advertize. After repeated assurances from the owner that everything was fixed after the destruction by the prom party we arrived to find:
Bathroom doors would not lock. One of the bathrooms on the second floor had the whole frame broken. Furniture in the family room broken with a piece of wood sticking out. To add to this, we saw mice in the kitchen and family room. The floor by the bar was filthy. They advertize Hot Tub but there was dirty mattress on it. As for the beds, all the mattresses creaked so much that we could feel the springs.To top it all, the caretaker told us that the propane tank was full for grilling but not even half hour into grilling the tank gets empty.We call the care taker and by the time he came our mood to grill was gone.The porch outside had nails protruding from the railings which was hazardous especially since we had kids.
We have kept to our side of the contract by staying the 2 full days and hope this review will wake up the owner and give us a break in the rent.

Do not stay here - Filthy!

We arrived to find this house is total disarray and unlivable. Among the issues were:

-There was food on the walls,
-a big bay front window was missing so hundreds of insects and moths were everywhere.
-The banister was weak and a few of the supports had broken off.
-the furniture in the family room was broken - a protruding piece of wood was sticking out of the leather couch.
-the floors were filthy
-mattresses were filthy
-bathrooms had not been cleaned
-the kitchen has not been cleaned
-witnessed mice in the kitchen

We were a pretty decent sized group with small children and we simply could not stay there due to the place being not only filthy and not ready for renters, but also dangerous to kids. We are not high maintenance people and all we were looking for was a decent place for us to stay while we enjoyed Hunter Mountain for the weekend. Doesn't have to be a palace. This place was so bad, we could not stay for even one night. We had to scramble to find another place to stay late on a Friday night, with young kids, in the pouring rain. We tried to get our money back from the owner but he has been uncooperative. We don't believe this is the fault of the owner as he has admittedly not been to the house in a long time. We believe the caretaker has not done his job and is now trying to deflect his ineptness to the renters. Simply, he is trying to save his job.

I have emails from the caretaker sent to the owner admitting the house was not suitable and that its tough to maintain after renting to two young prom groups back to back. I also have emails from the owner saying the place was not ready for renters, yet he as not offered to fully refund our money.

Unless the owner can prove the house is clean, safe and livable, DO NOT STAY THERE. Its not worth it. Look for a better, cleaner and safer house.
