activities and attractions in Silver City New Mexico
The attraction of Silver City is that it's far from anything (except everything). It's the home of the Tour of the Gila bike race (early May), a Blues Festival (late
May), the Pickamania roots music festival (September), and Weekend at the Galleries (October). We have historical sites of the ancient Mimbres peoples, the Apaches, and Hispanic and Anglo miners and ranchers. We're close to desert and mountain scenery in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico.
The Agave Ridge Retreat site is about 10 miles north of Silver City and several hundred feet higher. It's on Highway 15, on the way to the Gila Wilderness and cliff dwellings. The official wilderness is 35 miles beyond the property, but there are isolated spots in the Gila National Forest just beyond the driveway. We're at the end of the power and phone lines. It's a two-mile drive to Pinos Altos, a tiny, colorful town with minimal services.
The retreat is frequently visited by javelinas, and occasionally by mountain lions. We see deer, large lizards, foxes, and ravens. We rarely see the small Blacktail
Rattlesnakes that live in the area. The property is on a hummingbird migration route, and if fed, they can be numerous enough to be a nuisance.
Weather in the mountains is generally mild. Summer days can be hot, but at 6500 feet elevation, not terribly uncomfortable for hiking if you carry water and wear a hat. July is usually the monsoon month--a time of magnificent thunderstorms that usually last less than an hour in the afternoon.
Winter has spells of quite cold weather, including up to a foot of snow and temperatures near zero. The sun usually shines even when it's cold, and we usually see many weeks of mild, sunny weather.
vacation rental rates
Our in-season rate is $275 per night for the house or $225 for the upstairs bedroom only. These charges are for up to four guests for both bedrooms or two for one bedroom. It's $25 extra per night for extra guests. Our downstairs bedroom can be arranged either with twin beds or a king bed. We can
make sleeping arrangements for extra people.
We give one free night per week for reservations of a week or more,
and we can arrange lower rates for monthly stays. Rates are less during the winter. Call for special winter rates. We can also make arrangements for meetings or group retreats.
Agave Ridge is not an ideal place for pets, but we can accommodate
well-behaved pets downstairs only.
