quick facts

vacation rental description

The Icehouse, an artist and writer's home, is available for rent for
limited periods of time throughout the year.
The historic 19th century property derives its name from its original
purpose, as it was built to store blocks of ice during the warmer months of the year that had been brought down from the nearby
mountains.

It has been lovingly restored by the owner over the past few years
and - with great attention to detail - transformed into a spacious home with a welcoming and warm atmosphere.

Many original features have been conserved, and any contemporary
additions were carefully planned, using mostly reclaimed local wood and other ecologically sourced materials to create a comfortable
and unique living space.
The inside has been decorated by the owner and an interior designer
to combine old and new in harmonious ways, offering guests the experience of simple cabin-living in the Adirondack wilderness
in the most comfortable style.
Visitors will notice the great care that has gone into every little
detail:from the more obvious like the hand-cut red hardwood flooring in
parts of the building and the custom-made windows set into the original wood-panelled walls to the more subtle touches like a sheepskin-rug on the Adirondack rocking chair by the antique
fireplace, or the new and supremely cozy bedding on the comfortable
beds;
from the collected original artwork on the walls downstairs to the
imported Turkish rugs on the floors in the bedrooms, from the professional-grade cooker to the family-size stainless steel fridge
in the kitchen -
everything has its own aesthetic and functional purpose and
contributes to the simple, intimate and warm atmosphere of the building.

The Icehouse is surrounded by nearly a thousand acres of privately
owned land, and offers miles of hiking trails leading into the forests and up into the two mountains that belong to the house.

It has its own well and water reservoir, and in the summer its swimming pond with mountain view offers a
special treat to anyone willing to brave the cold water!

Near Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort (less than 6 miles), 10 minutes from Keen and 15 from Keene Valley, and only 15-20 minutes by car from Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, the property is close enough to all the local attractions and amenities while maintaining a "safe distance" to the demands of busy everyday-life.

PLEASE GET IN TOUCH FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND PICTURES as the space on this website is limited.

Also, please note that we do NOT USE THE CALENDAR FUNCTION, SO PLEASE JUST ENQUIRE ABOUT AVAILABILITY DIRECTLY!

cabin rental amenities

The Icehouse has two bedrooms on the 1st floor and comfortably sleeps
four to five people, but additional beds can be arranged to accomodate a total of six people.
Cotbeds for the youngest guests can also be provided upon request.
The mattresses, European-style bedding and towels are all new and of
very high quality.

The open plan kitchen features a beautiful antique French porcelain
sink, a large professional cooker, as well as a large fridge/ freezer, dishwasher, and a professional grade laundry machine and
dryer. It is generously equipped with high quality pots and pans and
all necessary cooking equipment that should satisfy even the more demanding cook!

In the cold months, a thermostat controlled furnace and gas-fire keep
the building very warm and
comfortable.

Wi-fi is available without extra charge, and an emergency phone line is also in place.

The house is serviced frequently and the road leading up to the property is ploughed regularly in the winter time.
Out of consideration for the environment there is no jaccuzzi and no
bathtub at the Icehouse.
Please bear in mind that smoking is strictly prohibited inside the
building!

traveler reviews for this lake placid cabin rental

lovely hide-away

Catherine (New York City, NY)
Review submitted: November 17, 2010   Date of arrival: September 15, 2010

We stayed at the Icehouse for a week in September and had a wonderful time - my kids (9 and 12)and our labradoodle thought it was very special, and they all loved being out in the woods!
It's nicely decorated and has all that you'd expect from a stylish cabin. The caretaker was very helpful and it was good to be greeted by him and shown around.
We'll be back in the winter for some skiing hopefully.

Nice cabin in the woods...

Review submitted: September 7, 2010   Date of arrival: August 4, 2010

Our family rented the Icehouse for a week in August 2010 while attending the 2010 Lake Placid lacrosse tournament. We enjoyed the house immensely. The ride to Lake Placid was about 20 - 25 minutes in the summer time. An easy drive. Whiteface was about 10 minutes. The location of the house is ideal for people visiting Whiteface and looking for a historic property to stay in. We had no problems during our stay. The house was ready and clean. All amenities listed on the website were present and in good working order. We used Pay Pal to pay for our stay. You can book this property with confidence. We have stayed in various places in the Lake Placid - Saranac Lake region for the past 30 years and really enjoyed the experience at the Icehouse. If you are looking for peace and quiet, this is the place for you. We look forward to our return to the Adirondack region in August 2011.
