Fall Activities

For many visitors to Deep Creek Lake, the fall offers a world of spectacular fall colors as the trees display their own "Autumn Glory". The lake area is beautiful and peaceful this time of year as the summer winds down. While you can still continue to power boat and sail into the fall, the autumn air is crisp so dress warmly-and is there a better way to view the fall foliage than by water? We don't think so. The fishing can also be fantastic this time of year as the fish stock up on forage for the approaching winter.

Autumn Glory Festival is a most anticipated event at Deep Creek for Fall visitors. The annual Autumn Glory Festival is held in mid-October in nearby Oakland, Maryland. For three days the town hosts many great events such as sthe Maryland State Banjo and Fiddle Championships, parades, Oktoberfests, pancake breakfasts, arts and crafts, antiques, a wide variety of foods, and more. Be sure to book The Lodge at Sawmill Hollow early as this is one of the most popular weekends all year!

With 74,000 acres of state forests, hiking and mountain biking are a great way to see this amazing area and the beautiful fall scenery.

Hunting, of course, has always been a popular sport in Garrett County. The state of Maryland maintains over 70,000 acres of hunting land available to the public. Deer hunting, turkey season and small game hunting are all available in the fall. Check out one of the local sporting stores for licenses and supplies as well as the various state parks for additional information.

Friend Vacation

Review submitted: July 20, 2012   Date of arrival: July 14, 2012

We have a Friend Vacation every year with five families(10 adults, 9 kids). This year we decided to try Deep Creek Lake instead of our usual Duck, NC. The house is nice, but honestly w/o AC it was an issue, especially in July. It was HOT! A few nights it was hard to sleep due to the heat. We brought our own fans and had a fan in each bedroom and at least two in every common area of the house, including the kitchen, which got very hot if you used the oven. Most of the adults felt the beds were not comfortable and mattresses should be replaced. It is quite a haul to a store, so bring what you need. The kids did enjoy playing in the lake and fishing off the dock. We did some horseback riding and tried the whitewater rafting at Wisp which was a big hit with our group. Swallow Falls was another great place to visit. We had a Girls Day Out and we went to lunch at Cornish Inn which was very good. If you don't mind the heat this is a good place to stay. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking supplies and dishes.

A wonderful summer getaway!

Review submitted: August 11, 2011   Date of arrival: July 29, 2011

We rented the Lodge at Sawmill Hollow for an extended-family vacation including 2 grandparents, 8 parents, and 9 children. The lodge had ample space for all of us, and was well equipped for our large group. The house is beautiful, the setting restful and gorgeous. Having lake access made it easy to stroll down anytime for a swim or an outing on the 2-person kayak or sunfish sailboat. We enjoyed the hot tub, too! We were a bit worried when we realized upon arrival that the lodge does not have air conditioning, but the lack of AC was not a problem: despite 100-degree heat in the towns we left, the temperature at the lodge only reached about 80 degrees each day and the mountain breezes (helped by ceiling fans) kept us comfortable. The rental listing is very accurate, the property clean and well maintained. The owner provided excellent service and was very responsive every time we contacted her. I would certainly recommend this rental.

Great place!

Review submitted: July 29, 2011   Date of arrival: February 11, 2011

We spent a wonderful weekend at The Lodge at Sawmill Hollow. There were 18 of us, with kids ranging in age from 10 months to 10 years. The house was immaculate, very well maintain, and the accommodations perfect for our big group. We all agree that this was a perfect vacation home for a big group. The house was fully equipped with absolutely everything we needed, very spacious giving us plenty of room to enjoy ourselves, we never felt crowded. The owners provided great customer service and left a binder with lots of information on things to do in the area. At the end of the weekend, we left with happy memories and a strong desire to go back soon. We hope to stay at the Lodge again next winter or maybe we will try spring/summer/fall. We would definitely recommend it to others.
