Great Girlfriends' Getaway

Tina Z. ()
Review submitted: August 22, 2011   Date of arrival: August 19, 2011

My six high school girlfriends and I spent the weekend here, originally with plans to go back into town for dining each night. We quickly changed our minds and decided to take advantage of the lake, the relaxation, and the roomy coziness of the house. We had everything we needed to cook in - fully stocked kitchen with great appliances, spices, and utensils. We would return again and again!

No bats, and barely any sound from the neighbors though we knew they were there. Sunrise was stunning. It was too warm to use the sauna, but everything else was perfect. The owners have gone out of their way to think of everything that you might need.

Home Away From Home

Review submitted: August 11, 2010   Date of arrival: September 4, 2009

This is an astonishing rental. I felt welcomed as an old friend. Everything I needed from garlic press, coffee maker, and salad bowls to binoculars, hammocks, and kayaks were available to me and my family in this spacious and historic setting. The charm of the house is complimented by the hypnotic ambiance of the lake. I cannot wait to return!

ps (Would have enjoyed excitement of nocturnal visitors, but alas, none showed!)

Nice House if you like bats!

Liz (United States)
Review submitted: July 24, 2010   Date of arrival: August 1, 2009

My family rented this house for a week, really actually Saturday to Friday because that is how the owners rent the house weekly. We had Bats flying around the house the first night we arrived and felt a little uneasy staying there the rest of the week, especially with my 3 month old son. Overall, beautiful View, and clean, but in my opinion overpriced for the outdated facilities and nocturnal visitors.

Owners response: really sorry that a bat got into the house while Liz was there. In our 7 years restoring this original lakehouse, dating from 1850, never had a bat before or since. We apologized profusely. And from what Dale told us there was only one appearance, and they were able to plug up where the bat went so it did not reappear the rest of their stay.
Unfortunately the bat population around here is dying off. we used to see several flying over the lake at dusk in the summer but now there are none. Nevertheless i would be uncomfortable too, especially with a baby in the house.

As for "outdated": the house is vintage, rustic, antique--low ceilings, alot of original wood. kind of like deetjen's in Big Sur which is on the national historic register. However, the 3 bathrooms are new as of 2004. The kitchen also, with high-end stainless appliances. however, kitchen cabinets are generic oak, not yet updated. The price is based on comparable lakefront rentals with 3 baths and 4 bedrooms and within 5 miles of Cornell/Ithaca (there are only a few this large and they are in demand due to their size and convenience to the amenities of Ithaca). You can definitely get lower pricing further north on the lake--20-30 miles from ithaca.
