vacation rental description

Google "Big Wilson Camp" or visit our Facebook page for more detail.

Let the music of rushing whitewater and the solitude of Maine's
100-Mile Wilderness lull you into a week-long daydream in this cozy
housekeeping cabin on the banks of picturesque Big Wilson Stream.
Your very own 2,500-foot stretch of river tumbles over a stepped
waterfall, ambles in a deep pool fit for a summertime swim, and
carves its way through a field of polished slate.

Nestled into 25 acres of stately dogwood, spruce, poplar and maple,
this north woods retreat offers a gallery-perfect setting for your
family vacation, accommodating 6-8 guests comfortably. A private
picnic area, complete with picnic table, pole-mounted charcoal
barbecue, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs, lends a park-like
atmosphere to your outings, without having to venture further than
your own back yard.

The adventurous among you can make daily treks to Borestone Mountain,
Little Wilson Falls, and Big Wilson Cliffs, all within 2.5 miles of
home base. You'll cross paths with Appalachian Trail hikers coming
down from Mount Katahdin and through the Gulf Hagas, Maine's answer
to the Grand Canyon. Little Greenwood Pond and larger Lake Onawa
beckon to the east, with miles of wilderness shoreline to explore by
boat. Or, commune with the river itself, paddling or packing to
nearby landmarks like Tobey Falls, Salmon Hole, and the suspension
bridge underpass in Willimantic.

Back at camp, barbecue your meals on the oversized deck, overlooking
the river, or retire indoors to a country kitchen / great room with a
hearth & wood stove, soaring ceilings, and 180-degree views of the
gently sloping north woods. By night, snuggle down into one of the
two main-floor bedrooms, or the sleeping loft, and let the river
sing you a lullaby, unaccompanied by the noises of civilization.

For an occasional fix of north woods hospitality or to restock your
provisions, there are eateries and camp stores in nearby Monson (8
miles, via winding Elliotsville Road) and Greenville (15 miles north
of Monson on Route 6/15). Keep an eye out along the way, especially
passing by boggy areas. You are in Moose Country!

What a Marvelous Week

Review submitted: December 10, 2011   Date of arrival: August 27, 2011

What a marvelous week we had, so completely different from the atmosphere back home! We live in a place with people everywhere, traffic, city sounds all over, and at Big Wilson Camp the only thing you can hear is the sound of a waterfall. Right out back. Magnificent! When we arrived, the first thing we noticed was how beautiful the property is and how well-furnished and well-kept the cabin is. The decor is just beautiful and the amenities do make you feel right at home. Throughout the week, we swam, hiked up to Little Wilson Falls and Borestone Mountain. Now, THAT was a hike never to be forgotten! Mom and I couldn't get to the very top because of the height (whew!), but we made it beyond the trees to where we could see the lake. There is nothing more beautiful!! (Sure does wear you out!) :)

Be careful on the rocks by the falls. They can be slippery. Water shoes are a must. Enjoy!

The cabin and property is outstanding!

Review submitted: November 29, 2011   Date of arrival: September 24, 2011

We really enjoyed our stay at Big Wilson Camp. The first few days we spent enjoying hikes and visits to all the surrounding areas, then realized we missed out on just enjoying the cabin, and spent a good chunk of the rest of our visit sitting by the fire and relaxing by the falls. We never saw a moose. (I think they knew hunting season was right around the corner.) A small gray fox walked within five feet of us while sitting quietly by the fire ring! There was so much to see and do and so little time. Make sure you make time for yourself to sit, relax and enjoy where you're staying. The cabin is outstanding. The property is even better.

beautiful

Review submitted: August 10, 2011   Date of arrival: July 30, 2011

It was a beautiful place just like the photos. Very Quiet and relaxing. I would recommend this place for hikers because it was very close to many trails. Its a little far from town so plan ahead. Bring DVDs for night-time as there is not a lot to do then. (No TV service except for DVD use). Waterfall was fun but very slippery- water shoes are a must. Be careful jumping from the ledge its not very deep. White water rafting was great and hiking trails are beautiful. A little dissappointed that we paid for a Moose Safari & didn't see anything so skip that!

Recommended for: adventure seekers, families with teenagers

Owners response: Big Wilson Camp is perfect for a family or group interested in an escape from civilization, without having to sacrifice the creature comforts. This is a getaway for reconnecting with your loved ones - hiking, swimming and boating by day, and toasting s'mores over the fire pit by night, with the sights and sounds of the waterfall completing the total immersion in nature. We generally don't miss, and don't want, TV to intrude upon our time there, but we do have a DVD & VHS library, and plenty of books and games, for rainy days.

Do bring water shoes! The falls carve through a field of polished slate, and some spots can be slippery. There is a nice sand & gravel beach below the falls where it's safer for very young children.

Read our online guestbook (google "Big Wilson Camp") for dozens of reviews and recommendations for things to do. The moose safaris are very popular, and seldom disappoint, but there are tips, too, about where to go to spot moose without a guide. We rarely miss seeing at least a few moose, fox, etc., during the course of a week.
