Rick's Adobe

Review submitted: July 7, 2011   Date of arrival: June 27, 2011

The adobe was exactly as described. Simple but secluded, and a great get-away if you want to "unplug" for a few days. The cell reception on the hill behind the adobe worked for my Sprint network Blackberry, but not for the Verizon and AT&T network devices that we had with us, and not for an older Sprint network phone.

Our only negative experience was in trying to find the adobe in the first place. The map is a bit ambiguous, and many of the roads are not marked in any way. It took about an hour and a half, and much trial and error, to find the Adobe once we left paved roads. The access roads are also very sketchy in parts. You should definitely bring a high-profile vehicle, probably four-wheel drive to access the adobe.

The surroundings were beautiful, and we didn't see another human being within site of the adobe the entire time we were there. We had a great time, and I would recommend the adobe to anyone who's looking for an off-the grid escape.

Recommended for: adventure seekers

Owners response: Billy,
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Sorry about the roads. We like the remoteness ourselves. I have since built 3 other Eco friendly cabins. Check our other rental in Comfort Texas: Vacation Rental ID. 82331, Comfort Cabin Rental.

Still secluded but a lot easier to get to and close to wineries.

Thanks, Rick.

The setting was exceptional ! Beautiful views and completely private and off the grid . The description was accurate . I was well prepared but pleased to find extra firewood and decent cast iron cookware .
It does not appear to have been much upkeep to the property . I cleaned for two days , Removed dead mice and there was mouse feces everywhere including the bedding . I would recommend the property next week as it should still be clean .
I would rent it again if I knew I would not spend two of my seven days cleaning .
Terilingua is just 13 miles down the dirt road has everything . The Cottonwood Store is well stocked for all your needs . I did bring my own firewood and water with me from New Mexico as it was much cheaper .
La Kiva bar has great food and music as well as The Starlight for a night on the town .Enjoyed music by Hank Woji .

Recommended for: adventure seekers, romantic getaway

Owners response: Glade guest enjoyed the place. Sorry for the mice. With no one there for a month at a time the mice just have a party! It's not for everyone. But if you don't mind cleaning it's a deal. We'll keep putting out rat bait and hope there party on the poison. Check out the pictures and reviews, they are right on the money as to what you get.

Almost, but not quite

Rick's Adobe is quiet and remote, just like the ad reads. I'd say the ad is mostly accurate. The room is a bit more crowded than in the photograph, with chairs, kerosene, fire wood, etc. We just stored most of that stuff outside. The bed has a plastic cover over the mattress, which makes sense, but it is noisy when you move (read: difficult to sleep with another person when they move).

This cabin is good if you're looking for something akin to an old hunter's cabin for one person perhaps. My gripe is that it's dirty. Sure, dirt can be expected in something made of adobe and the day before we arrived the wind (and sand) was gusting at 45 mph, which probably added to the dust. I camp a lot and a bit of dust/dirt isn't a problem. The problem was the mouse droppings on the table, bed, chest of drawers, food shelf (not pictured), and the floor. That, along with spider webs, made for a less than optimal stay. In fact, I did as the owner asks..."Please leave the adobe better than you found it." I swept the mouse droppings off the surfaces, brushed up the spider webs, and swept it all out the door.

My second gripe is the smell of urine near the front door. Chances are guys stand on the front stoop and pee in the plants rather than trekking 20 yds. over to the outhouse. (The outhouse is clean and odor free by the way.) So, going in and out is also less than optimal.

Being a fan of off-the-grid living, I wanted to see how the outdoor PV-powered shower pump worked (though it was too cold to shower outdoors). The pump worked for a bit, then stopped pumping. I figure it was clogged with the algae you can see in the tubing.

The old wood-burning stove works really well. I had to do a bit of adjusting of the metal pieces that were falling in or not aligned, but other than that it kept the room toasty (it got down to freezing during our stay).

Overall experience: Okay if you want to clean something you're paying to rent (take a dust mask so you can sweep it out, it got rather dusty when I cleaned it). It is quiet. Good place for reading, watching the sun rise over the Chisos, or set of the Solitario. But, it didn't meet our expectations. We left early. I won't rent it again.
