activities and attractions in Silver City New Mexico
In 2008, National Geographic Adventure magazine named Silver City one
of the "next great adventure towns"--"Quaint, friendly, and
affordable, southwestern New Mexico’s Silver City is what Santa Fe was
before trustafarians took over. Hike or bike seven miles of rocky
trails in the rolling Boston Hills, a reclaimed historic mining area
overlooking town. Or hook up with the nearby Continental Divide Trail
ascending the Pinos Altos Mountains in 3.3-million-acre Gila National
Forest."
Silver City, at 6,000 ft. altitude, boasts a mild climate with four
gentle seasons. It is considered among the top art towns in the
country according to Where to Retire magazine, with dozens of
galleries and studios as well as active regional arts councils. Its
Victorian charm and low-key lifestyle, combined with a lively
calendar of cultural events, have long attracted visitors. Annual
events include Western New Mexico University theatre and jazz events,
Silver City Blues Festival, a film festival, and the Tour of the Gila
bike race.
Though Silver City has a quaint small-town feel, it benefits from
serving as the county seat for Grant County and has excellent medical
facilities. The cost of living is below average and taxes are among
the lowest in the nation.
The Silver City Chamber of Commerce hosts a great and informative
website for visitors, residents, and potential residents.
