activities and attractions in Yarmouth Port Cape Cod
Beaches:
*Bass River Beach, off South Shore Drive in Bass River
(South Yarmouth) located at the mouth of the largest tidal river on
the eastern seaboard, offers restrooms & snack bar, plus a wheelchair-
accessible fishing pier. Beaches along this south shore (Nantucket
Sound) are clean &have comfortable water temps (kids will want to
swim all day!). A beach sticker or a day pass is needed to park here.
*Grays Beach, off Center Street in Yarmouth Port is a small beach
good for young children; it adjoins the Callery-Darling Conservation
Area. The Bass Hole boardwalk offers one ofthe Mid Cape's most scenic
walks. Parking is free here, & there's a picnic area with grills.
*Seagull Beach, off South Sea Avenue in West Yarmouth has rolling
dunes, a boardwalk, & restrooms & a snack bar. Bring bug
spray though, for the Greenhead flies in July. You'll need a beach
sticker or day pass.
*Chapin Beach at the northwest corner of Dennis,
is a favorite of 4wheelers with a permit (yes they do check)
Walking Trails and Bike Paths:
* Yarmouth Boardwalk, A unique & lovely walking trail that stretches through swamp and marsh and leads to the edge of pretty Swan Pond, which is ringed with woods. To get here, take Winslow Gray Road northeast from Route 28, turn right on Meadowbrook Lane, and take it to the end.
* Mayfair Road in YarmouthPort is a designated bicycle route and you can ride from Yarmouth to Eastham in about 22 miles following the trail.
Follins Pond: Connected to the Nantucket Sound via Bass River, in the
1950's shore rocks were found along the pond into which were drilled
holes that strongly resembled Norse mooring stones (the Norse were
known to drill holes into which iron pins were inserted for the
purpose of mooring their knarrer). It was claimed that the tops of
the posts were about a foot underground, and arranged in a pattern
that might have been for either a Norse shipyard or drydock. At about
the same time a 'Viking horse bone' was unearthed at Follins Pond. It
was of the opinion that at least a few horses were brought from
Greenland by the Norse on their further voyages of exploration.
Other:
Golf Courses: Close to 4 golf courses. Dennis Pines, Dennis Highlands,
Bayberry Hill and Bass River with spectacular view of the river.
