Hi Everyone ~
My name is Nancy and my husband and I just recently purchased this wonderful house on the pond which we call the Dollar House. There is a unique story about it that I would like to share with you.
The house was built in the 1970's for the Kerry family on a piece of property directly on Cape Cod Bay in Eastham. They had done some renovating here and there to keep the house updated but after awhile the Kerry family wanted to demolish the house to make room for a grand house on the water.
Along came Connie who was a long time friend of the Kerry's. She wanted to buy that building. In 2003 the Kerry family told her she could have it for $1.00 BUT she had to move the house off the property. Connie jumped at the chance as she owned much property in Eastham and could find a place for it.
The house was cut into 3 pieces and transported to the spot where it sits now on a brand new foundation just 100 feet from Moll's Pond. The cost of the move I was told was $35,000 (so much for the $1.00). Connie's husband John who is in construction and has been a friend of mine for more than 10 years, worked on the house doing a little of this and a little of that in his spare time. Sadly Connie passed away in 2004 and so John stopped working on the house ~He will tell you it was her baby~
As I said Connie and John owned more property and a friend of mine moved into one of the houses up behind the pond near the road. When I went to visit her I looked out her window and admired the house down on the pond. Really wished I had it and I didn't know it belonged to John until then. That was 4 years ago.
Well times are really tough for everyone. One day this past summer I recognized the house in one of the real estate books and immediately asked John if it was his house on the pond. We struck a deal! My husband and I took all our funds out of our IRAs to purchase it and had the closing the end of October.
(Funny thing is that my husband, who is a mason contractor, remembered that he worked on the foundation of the house when it was on the original site)
Now there was work to be done. We've put in all new floors, sheetrock, insulation, heating, water, wiring, plumbing, doors, new shingles and trim, replaced windows, new kitchen, new bath, fixtures, etc. The large deck, foundation, and roof are original (from after the move). All interior furnishings and appliances are new. We are now awaiting the delivery of couches/beds/dressers. This week the landscaping will begin, weather permitting.
Yeah ~ We call it the dollar house!!!! Maybe some day I'll figure out how many dollars it really took and change the name.
The Kerry family, John, and others who were involved with the house come to see the progress and are very pleased with the life we have returned to a house that provided so many people with fond memories of times gone by.
We hope that the $House provides you, your family, and friends with fond memories of a wonderful vacation.
