activities and attractions in St Martin/Maarten Caribbean

Downtown Phillipsburg (the Dutch side capital city) has duty-free shopping with amazing prices on liquor (how about $5.99 for a bottle of Absolut vodka?), genuine Cuban cigars, jewelry, and electronics from all over the world. The official currency is the Guilder, but the American dollar is universally accepted.

The French side is not like being in France, it is France, but in a Caribbean climate, where almost everyone speaks some English, and everyone is friendly! Although the Euro is the official currency and used everywhere, the American dollar is also accepted; some restaurants offer a 1:1 exchange ratio (which is like getting a 33% discount for using the dollar).

Sint Maarten (Dutch) and Saint Martin (French) both offer fabulous restaurants featuring a wide range of international cuisines. Grande Case (French side) has earned the reputation of being "the gastronomic capital of the Caribbean".

Beautiful condo, wonderful location, great views

Terry and Maddy (Chicago, il, usa)
Review submitted: February 24, 2012   Date of arrival: January 12, 2012

My wife and I spent three relaxing weeks and really enjoyed ourselves. The condo is beautiful, the beds comfortable, the kitchen fully equipped. We felt at home.

The Lanai was particularly nice, with a view of the Simpson Bay yacht harbor, the lagoon and beautiful sunsets. We started most days with breakfast on the Lanai, and often came back for the sunset, complete with vodka tonic and cheese crackers.

The location is wonderful. Simpson bay is right down the hill with its selection of restaurants. Being in the Simpson Bay area really cuts down on driving in bad traffic.

Our best outing was to rent a motorboat from the Liberty Hotel and drive it around the lagoon to see all of the sights up close. We docked the boat in Marigot and had a fabulous lunch at the Tropicana restaurant. Quite an afternoon.

This was our seventh trip to St. Maarten, and the longest we have stayed. We love the island for the great restaurants in Grand Case, the shopping in Phillipsburg, and the nice casinos. I would recommend it to anyone.

Owners response: Thanks for letting us know that staying in our home was an important part of enjoying your vacation experience in Sint Maarten. We very much enjoy sharing our "Perfect Pelican Escape" with folks who appreciate feeling "at home" as soon as they arrive, rather than just "checking in".

We know how stressful it can be after traveling for several hours (sometimes almost a full day, depending upon airline connections), only to find that there are no "basics" on hand. Our "pay ahead" approach -- having plenty of non-perishables like coffee, canned goods, basic spices, popcorn, a bottle of wine, and even a couple of good cigars on hand really seems to help our guests relax right away.

Most of our guests end up leaving more for the next group than they use, which only makes it better for everyone!

Sint Maarten is a very, very special place with two (French and Dutch) cultures that will really make your vacation here a unique experience. We are always pleased to hear that our home and it's truly great location have been a key component to a wonderful memory, and hope you will come back again soon.

Cheers!

Joan & Jim
