Playa del Carmen is a laid-back yet lively beach town located one hour south of the Cancun International Airport. Close in distance yet far different from the high-rise condos & tourist traps in Cancun. Playa del Carmen has strict zoning restrictions which limit all buildings to four stories or less.

Playa, as the locals call it, is an international holiday destination for people from all over the world.  The famous 5th Avenue is a pedestrian only main street through the heart of downtown Playa. Most people come to Playa del Carmen for the beautiful white-sand beaches of the Caribbean. Nearly all the beaches in Playa del Carmen are public with the exception of the All-Inclusive resorts. Mamitas is a lively beach destination that offer chair rentals ($2 USD / day) and have waiters who come right to you on the sand for drinks or food.

All guests of Villa Alegria enjoy the privileges at the Reef Club resort. The Reef Club has two beautiful swimming pools (one with a swim-up bar) and a beautifully restored beach with plenty of chairs and palapas. They also have a full dive shop and book both scuba or snorkel trips daily. You can rent jet-skis sailboats and wind-surfers.  The Reef Club also offers the choice to have an "All Inclusive" day package - meaning you get unlimited food & drink (including alcohol) for a great price. You can choose the free or All-Inclusive package on a daily basis.   The Reef Club has a Kids Club, which is included in the All-Inclusive package for children 12 and under.

For a change of pace, visit Xel-Ha or Xcaret - just a short drive or taxi ride from Playa. Both are beautiful water-ecotourism parks that offer activities such as Swim with the Dolphins, river raft floating, snorkeling (gear provided) and many other water activities.

Visit the Mayan ruins at Tulum (30 minutes drive) or venture further to see Chichen Itza.

Scuba-diving enthusiasts can book boat dives from town or take the Cozumel ferry from Playa (runs nearly every hour) for some of the best reef diving in the world.  Akumal is a favorite destination for observing the turtles who call this beautiful bay home and only 20 minutes drive south of Playa.
