vacation rental description

The Boathaus was built by my father in the early 1960s on his long- awaited retirement. There he created space for his Penn Yan wooden fishing boat--he loved to troll for salmon trout-- and made a place to keep the weather from his beloved Olds. Ten years ago on a friend's suggestion, I remodeled the boathouse into the most perfect, relaxing, stress-free, vacation environment ever. The new Boathaus. Right on and into the water, its north and west glass walls frame a 180 degree view of Seneca Lake, its spectacular sunsets and summer storms. The 24' x 9' covered front deck juts into the water, and feels like being on a cruise ship without the swells. There are two bedrooms, one with double bed, the other with trundles, modern bathroom, galley kitchen including micro, gas stovetop, refridgerator, dishes, silver, cookware, comfortable lounge and dining area. All with this incredible, breathtaking view of the lake.

activities and attractions in Seneca Lake Finger Lakes

The Boathaus is within 3 miles of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail featuring some of the top wineries in the States. Between Lodi and Watkins Glen there are some 23 wineries in 23 miles. And many excellent restaurants offering fine dining experiences for lunch or dinner.

Neighboring Amish farmers offer their seasonal fresh produce at local stands and markets.

To the south on Route 414 is new York's only National Forest, the Finger Lakes National Forest with its hiking trails crossing federal grazing lands. The walks are similar to trails in England.

The Boathaus is about half an hour from Ithaca, home of Cornell and Ithaca College, and the famous Wegman Market. Ithaca offers a variety of great restaurants and shopping opportunities, the Johnson Museum of Art, designed by I.M.Pei, the Plantation Gardens and the famous Sapsucker Woods at Cornell, and the ScienCenter founded by Carl Sagan, and the new world class Earth Museum north of Ithaca on route 96.

South about an hour is a another world class museum, Corning Museum of Glass and the Rockwell Museum, Mark Twain's Study in Elmira, a national Warplane Museum in Horseheads. Rochester houses the George Eastman House with its vintage movie archive.

Taughannock Falls in Trumansburg is higher than Niagara, a great mile hike.

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (federal) is a half-hour to the north, as is the birthplace of women's rights movement, Seneca Falls, with the National Women's Historical Park.

Want to play golf? Ten minutes get you to Bonavista, a public, 9-hole, well maintained course with reasonable fees.

For a long day's trip, there is Cooperstown with the Baseball Hall of Fame for some, and Glimmerglass for others.

Anniversary Weekend

AshleyW924 (Brighton,NY, USA)
Review submitted: October 19, 2012   Date of arrival: October 12, 2012

We had a great time at the Boathaus. It was very cozy. The view is absolutely gorgeous. Very clean and all the amenities were working properly. Carolyn gave us a tour when we first got there and she had a basket of goodies with fresh veges from her garden. We traveled the entire lake. We had dinner at Suzanne's which was fantastic! Would recommend this to anyone that needs a nice relaxing weekend away.

Recommended for: sight seeing, romantic getaway

Owners response: This charming couple were the perfect guests, enthusiastic, warm and ready for an exciting weekend. They prepared before coming to check out the restaurants, for instance, and chose the outstanding dinning experience ever--Suzanne Fine Cusine, just a few miles away. These still newlyweds left the Boathaus picked up and neat. They are very welcomed to return anytime.
