If this house could speak, it would tell of many wonderful get-togethers of families and friends who have visited over the years for swimming, fishing, barbecues, family reunions, and good times - all enjoying this fantastic spot on the Camden side of Lake Wateree.
Featuring two bedrooms, LR, kitchen, magnificent screened in porch, deck, and artist's studio (with twin beds), this house is being offered for rentals for the first time. The former owner, Jak Smyrl, was one of the foremost artists in SC. Honored prior to his death by the SC Legislature for his outstanding contributions to art, this house reflects Jak's creativity and humor. He was a cartoonist for "The State Newspaper" in Columbia for many years and author and illustrator of "Random Rimes" - a charming book filled with poems and ballads. You will see lots of examples of his artwork in the house.
Nestled amongst native pines and hardwoods, the Lakehouse is situated on a gorgeous, sloping, private 1.5 acre lot. Landscaped in a beautiful and natural style, a Winnsboro granite seawall separates land and water. An extraordinary deck with built in benches offers a grand outdoor living room. While located on the main channel, a natural island is located directly across from the house. These islands (three in a line) are nesting places for native birds. You will see egrets, cranes, ospreys, geese, ducks, and other waterfowl. You may even spot a bald eagle. This is truly a birdwatcher's paradise.
Swimming off the dock is just perfect! The water depth at the end of the dock varies from 3.5 to 7 feet. A sandy area close to the seawall is a perfect spot for children. If you like to fish, throw your line right off the dock. With a little luck, you'll reel in bream, bass, and catfish. A rustic 'party shed', located at the water's edge, is an additional spot for eating an ice-cold watermelon or grilling a burger or just putting your feet up with a good book right on the edge of the water.
The Lakehouse ws built in the early 70's from timbers reclaimed from an historic farmhouse. The cabin is rustic in style; cozy and comfortable. The master bedroom is furnished with a queen size bed; the guest room also with a queen-size bed, and there are two twin beds in the studio. The cabin is filled with antiques and unique pieces. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything imaginable that you'll need for cooking. Dine inside or enjoy a wonderful meal on the screened porch. There is one bath. The house is heated and cooled with central heat/air and there are ceiling fans throughout the house. For nighttime entertainment, there is TV/DVD. Watch your favorite movie or catch the local channels. July 4 week is spectacular. Watch a magnificent fireworks show right from the dock and be in the midst of the flotilla of boats that anchor all over the lake for the festivities. Maximum occupancy is six.
Camden, the closest town (15 miles away) is a beautiful historic town. There are plenty of locally owned eateries, a wonderful bakery, movie theater, and "Historic Camden" - a restored Revolutionary war site. The Arts Center offers exhibits and programs. The "Carolina Cup" and "Colonial Cup" (annual steeplechase races) are held at the Springdale Race Course and are very popular events. There are state parks in the area, the Columbia zoo within easy driving distance, and many other attractions for day-trips. You'll find additional information and brochures in the house.
If you'd like, bring your own boat. There is a boat ramp on the property which is suitable for launching small to mid-size trailered boats. Tie up at the dock right in front of the house. Larger vessels can be launched at any of the commercial marinas nearby. A small fishing cove just west of the house is a great spot for 'shore' fishing. If you enjoy participating in fishing tournaments, this is a great spot to come home to after a hard day on the water! For those seeking a beautiful private place for a honeymoon, this is a perfect place.
Regarding payment options, we accept personal checks, money orders, cashier's checks, and credit cards through PayPal only.
The Lakehouse is available April through November. Book now for those great summer months on the water! Please feel free to email with any questions that you have about the house or area.
