Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire's largest and most famous lake, is a longtime favorite vacation and fishing spot. Winnipesaukee - with 70 square miles of water, 250 islands, and 240 miles of shoreline - offers great cold and warm water fishing. It is undoubtedly one of the best lake trout and salmon fishing waters in New England and is appealing for its large size, unlimited access, and varied fishing conditions and habitat. At ice-out in late April/early May and when the season opens, Alton Bay and Merrymeeting River are local hot spots for salmon. As the ice leaves, lake trout and salmon may be taken by trolling streamer flies, lures and sewed-on bait, such as smelt, near the surface. A popular local method of taking trout and salmon is with live smelt. As the season progresses, trout and salmon are taken in deeper water by trolling with weighted line and down-riggers. Rainbow trout, introduced in 1990, offer excellent opportunities for the angler and are caught using the same methods that attract salmon. There is also excellent smallmouth bass fishing in the rocky areas on all shores. Bass fishing is particularly good during the spring nesting period from May to July 1. The shoreline of the lake is highly developed with summer camps and an ever-increasing number of year-round homes and condominiums. Recreational boat traffic is quite heavy in the summer, but fishermen can still find plenty of room for fishing all season. Camps, motels, fishing supplies, bait and food are widely available in the area, as are launch sites.
