activities and attractions in New Marlborough Berkshires MA

Spend your summer at our Southfield Retreat in the Berkshires, and
begin creating memories to last a life time! Our 100 year old
country house has been lovingly preserved and we offer a chance for
you to return to the simple life, with basic amenities, and no high
tech distractions! Our quiet village is situated in an area where
all major attractions are never more than a half hour drive away...

York Lake, (10 minutes) is a state owned park, and features
swimming, boating, fishing, and fire pits for BBQs – there is a Park
Ranger present to collect the minimal daily fee, or you can purchase
a summer pass.

Umpachene Falls, (10 minutes) is open to all New Marlborough
residents (and renters), and is a must see spot to discover the
hidden cave you can slip into under the small water fall. Umpachene
Park where the Konkapot River meets the Whiting River features
swings, fire pits, scenic trails and fishing. There are endless
little water falls and pools, shallow and deep for swimming, in the
cold sparkling rivers.

Campbell’s Falls State Park (10 minutes) is a majestic water fall,
with steep trails to the bottom of this 80 foot drop, it is state
owned with the MA/CT border running right through the middle of the
park. Scenic trails, fire pits, fishing.

Superior dining is not more than 10 minutes away either, with the
village of New Marlborough offering candlelight dining in the
renowned Old Inn on the Green in the heart of the village. Their
historic 1760 Inn was once a stop on the Stagecoach Route. Just to
the West of the Inn is Mepal Manor, a renovated 1907 castle, now a
country hotel, featuring a luxury spa that serves lunch with
their 'spa day package' as well as offering many lovely services and
amenities.

The Southfield Café is at the center of our village, within walking
distance, and has just reopened serving breakfast, lunch and dinner,
as well as having a liquor license. Stashed away in a corner behind
the old Buggy Whip Factory, now Antique Center, is Farm Country
Soup, where homemade soups are made four days a week and are
available for take out in quart containers, fresh and frozen. There
is nothing like their cold Gazpacho on a hot day, as well as other
treats like cold Cucumber Dill or Carrot Ginger Soups!

The Mill River Store is two miles away, (New Marlborough is made up
of five small villages) and has just about anything you might need
on a quick trip to the store. There is a deli and small eating area
at the back of this very authentic "New England General Store", that
provides pastries and donuts on weekend mornings, brought in from
Great Barrington. Another corner makes up the "liquor store" as
they sell a full line of alcoholic beverages, as well as a variety
of dry goods, groceries, newspapers; there is a pay phone, fax/copy
machine available for a small fee, and any questions or local
information can most likely be answered by someone "hanging out" on
the front porch.

Mill River is also the 'hub of New Marlborough' where you will find
the library, town hall, elementary school/playground, and the
closest auto mechanic garage - there are no gas stations in New
Marlborough - you have to drive to Norfolk or Canaan, Connecticut (6
miles) or to Great Barrington, Massachusetts (12 miles).

Back in the village of Southfield, The Buggy Whip Antique Center
offers multiple antique dealers in a historic 200 year old former
Buggy Whip Manufacturing Company. Visit the museum at the antique
center for great history about whip making, watch the video that
shows the factory when it was active, and peruse the photo
chronicles of the building throughout the years. This Buggy Whip
Factory was the oldest operating factory of its kind in the country
prior to it shutting down in the early 1980’s.

Great Barrington, (20 minutes) is the hub of the southern
Berkshires, and has all your shopping needs, with grocery stores,
health food stores, specialty shops, as well as a Farmer's Market
every Saturday morning at the old train depot. There are many great
restaurants, a tri-plex movie theater, and galleries for your
enjoyment. Tanglewood is close by in Stockbridge, and Jacob's
Pillow Dance Theater in Becket is about 40 minutes away.

Norfolk only six miles south has the Infinity Hall with the most unbelieveable concert offerings and Yale Summer Schol of Music with more classical concerts.

Canaan Connecticut, only six miles from Southfield has many dining
options, with two pubs, a movie theater that serves dinner during
the movie, a few pizza and sub places, an old fashioned
diner, and the "Snack Shack", along with a great ice cream shop,
serving meals and fountain treats from a renovated train caboose.
There is also a new super Stop and Shop, a Brooks drug store, and
several other clothing and gift shops.
