Cove Cottage in Swans Island

The property has a water view of Mackerel Cove and is within walking distance of the ocean. It is in the Down East , Acadia National Park locale . The cottage  is not ocean frontage but within a two minute walk from the  shore line. The area is peaceful and quiet with limited traffic on a private road . There are three neighboring residences . There are many large windows which allow occupants to view mackerel cove .There are many spruce trees on the property and there are many birds, turkeys, racoons, deer,  eagles, osprey, and at times seals and whales can be seen in the cove .

The island is accessible by the Maine State Ferry service in Bass Harbor and runs six times a day. In busy seasons reservations are recommended 30 days in advance . The ferry ride offers sightings of porpoises, birds, and sometimes pilot whales. The greater Swans Island area is basically a lobstering and fishing community of about 300 residents. Approximately forty families make their living by lobstering. There are fishing docks, deep water anchorages, and harbor access. During the summer, the residential community increases to about one thousand seasonal people who own pivate homes. There are NO commercial rental establishments, or hotels, etc on the island. 

The entire area has magnificent ocean and mountain views. Vistas of Acadia Mountains, many off shore islands and the Maine coast prevail on all boundries of the island. One need only to hike, bike or drive to a new location every day for another beautiful experience.

The cottage is a summer residence, complete with a gas fireplace that if needed provides more then enough heat during the summer months,  washer, dryer, dishwasher, microwave, sateliteTV, internet acess is available for free at the libary and  we are working on getting the internet at the house ,should be available this summer.  A full complement of kitchen utensils are available for cooking. There are 2 bedrooms with a queen  bed in ea. there is a queen pull out couch in the loft area . On the lower level is a futon which would be suited for a child .  Bed linens and towels are not provided. More extensive food shopping should be completed on the mainland before boarding the ferry, make sure you bring a cooler. Fresh seafood and lobster can be purchased on the harbor docks. There are several small restaurants which feature home cooked meals.  There is a small store now open on the island and is open seven days a week .  So if you forget something on the main land it may be available .No alcohol is sold on the island, but guests may bring their own from the mainland

Swans Island offers peace, quiet and an enhance opportunity to appreciate nature, hiking, biking , sailing, kayaking,  fishing and relaxing. There are miles of ocean view shoreline hiking trails, mountain bike trails and scenic vistas. It is a place to explore and find your way without commercial guides or tours. Many off shore smaller islands offer a chance for travel by kayak, canoe, sailing and picnic lunches. There is one "Fine Sand Beach" that is suitable for swimming and relaxing located a few minutes from the house. One can ,hike, or bike to the beach. It is never crowded. The old stone quarry is also a great place to picnic and swim

Day trips to Acadia National Park,Bar Harbor or whale watching  trips are possible with advance planning. However, most people go to Swans Island and enjoy the immediate island.

Usually on a weekly basis , there are island church suppers, breakfasts, or simple musical events where you can appreciate the unique culture of Swans Island.

The rental rate for June , July , August and September is $850 to $950 weekly. Occupancy is from Saturdays 2 pm to Saturday 10 am. Exceptions can be made .   Two hundred fifty ($250) security fee is collected in advance and returned after your departure. Upon signing a week to week lease agreement, fifty percent of the rent with the full security fee is collected. The rental balance is due 30 days in advance of occupancy.
