activities and attractions in San Francisco San Francisco Bay Area

The flat is located in San Francisco’s hip Mission District, which is a diverse neighborhood known for its thriving community of artists, trendy boutiques, great restaurants, and colorful murals. The neighborhood is a “Walkers’ Paradise” according to WalkScore, and our address has a walkability rating of 92 out of 100.  Boasting the best (warmest) weather of all the City’s micro-climates, you’ll find it easy to hang with the locals at a neighborhood park, or at one of the neighborhood’s many sidewalk cafes.

In our corner of the Mission, within a ten minute walk from the flat, one can find the following and more:

  • Coffee shops - Eight different sit-down coffee shops that offer free wireless Internet and some of the best coffee you'll find in SF.  Some of our favorites are: Haus, Philz, Sugarlump, Progressive Grounds, Dynamo, & L's
  • Restaurants - Some of our favorites are: Sushi Bistro, St. Francis Ice Creamery, El Metate, Roosevelt Tamale Parlor, Sneaky's BBQ, La Palma, Pal's Takeaway, San Francisco Taqueria, Manivanh Thai, Humphrey Slocombe Ice Cream, La Torta Gorda, and Yat's New Orleans Original Po Boys.
  • Excellent green grocers, bakeries, & markets, including Dominguez Bakery (fresh churros on Sunday mornings) and Belmar-La Gallinita Meat Market (The oldest carniceria in SF, Belmar offers the best "Ranchera" grilling meat you'll find in the City).
  • Great boutiques, including the Arkay Workshop, Mission Skateboards, Virginia Howell’s, GG Tukuy Indigenous Arts & Crafts, and the Candy Kitchen lingerie store
  • Yoga studios & fitness club
  • Murals (Balmy Alley & just about everywhere else one looks.  The Mission District has more murals than any other neighborhood in the USA!)
  • Artists' studios & galleries, including Galeria de la Raza, Triple Base Gallery, Eleanor Harwood Gallery, and Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center
  • 24-hour Walgreens drugstore
  • US Post Office annex that offers Internet access, fax service, and a photocopier.  *It's also a video store.*
  • Brava Theater Center
  • Great parks, including Lower 24th St. Mini Park, Precita Park, and Potrero del Sol skatepark

Many more delicious restaurants, interesting shops, and great parks can be found further afield in our pedestrian-friendly neighborhood.

When it's time to tear yourself away from the Mission in order to join the tourist hordes at Union Square or Fisherman’s Wharf, you’ll find it easy to make your way around our small city. In fact, being that San Francisco is only 46.7 square miles (121 km2), it is not unheard of for guests to walk from the Mission District to downtown, or even all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

For those needing faster transportation, San Francisco’s efficient and inexpensive public transit system has stops throughout the City. Within two blocks of our home you will find four different bus lines that can transport you to the Pacific Ocean in about forty minutes, or have you in the heart of downtown in about twenty minutes. Likewise, the unit is less than a fifteen minute walk from one of the Mission District’s two BART subway stations. From the BART station you can be in downtown San Francisco in ten minutes, at the airport in twenty-five minutes, or in Oakland or Berkeley in about thirty minutes. Using San Francisco's public transportation is, in most cases, cheaper, easier, and more convenient than renting a car. However, should you decide to visit wineries in Napa or Sonoma, or take a drive along California’s famed Pacific Coast Highway, you will find many conveniently located car rental agencies, some of which will even pick you up and drop you off at the unit free of charge.
