Mammoth Lakes Information

There's no limit to the exhilarating experiences and adventures you can have in Mammoth – fish in our many lakes and streams, tee it up at California's highest golf courses, hike in the backcountry and celebrate in the mountains.

Winters in Mammoth Lakes are famous for huge snow packs. Recently over 600 inches have fallen in one season.  Mammoth offers more days on the hill than any resort in California.  350 skiable acres.  3,100 ft. vertical drop.  150 trails.  29 lifts.

In addition to the exceptional skiing and snowboarding you will find miles of trails for snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, all with magnificent views of the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains!

Summer, Mammoth’s “other” season, brings even more opportunity for recreation: Golf, hiking, horseback riding or just soaking in the sun. For the avid mountain biker, Mammoth Mountain Bike Park offers some of the most diverse and challenging terrain around. The Eastern Sierra is also world famous for trout fishing.
Many other events are held throughout the summer; Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee, Bluesapalooza and Festival of Beers, arts and crafts festivals, Fourth of July parade and fireworks, Fireman’s Picnic, just to name a few.

• Fishing

Beginner to expert anglers can fish for trout at more than 400 lakes and 1,100 miles of streams in the Inyo National Forest area.  Numerous derbies are held during the Summer.

• Hiking
Over thirty trail heads provide access to the 1,303,477 acres of wilderness backcountry for hikers seeking to escape into primitive and pristine areas.  Trails of easy, moderate and strenuous ability lead to Alpine lakes and creeks, the John Muir Trail and the Ansel Adams Wilderness.
Devil's Postpile National Monument is located in Red's Meadow. The columns of basalt were formed approx. 900,000 years ago when a lava flow slowed and began to cool and crack. Temperatures deep within the lava bed were uniform enough to produce six-sided columnar joints, 40 to 60 feet high resembling a giant pipe organ, polished to a shine by later glacial action.
Rainbow Falls is located downstream from the Devil's Postpile. The headwaters of the San Joaquin River flows over an abrupt 101-foot drop, sending rainbows of color into the midst. Truly a sight that is breathtaking short hike.
• Golf

The Sierra Star Golf Course is a championship 18-hole, par 71 layout nestled within a shelter of Jeffrey Pines and White Fir, where each hole offers its own spectacular view. Tree-lined fairways, well-trapped greens, and numerous lakes and ponds make this course another challenging golf experience for the low handicap golfer, and also very enjoyable for the occasional recreational player.

Snowcreek Golf Course, is nestled alongside the majestic Sherwin mountain range, the course provides spectacular, scenic enjoyment for players of every level.  Snowcreek is noted for its elevated greens, multiple bunkers, and extensive use of tranquil lakes and streams. Snowcreek Golf Club offers a driving range, and putting green.

traveler reviews for this mammoth lakes condo rental

Trouble, Trouble, Trouble

Review submitted: July 14, 2014   Date of arrival: July 3, 2014

We booked this condo 3 months ahead of time deciding to go with an owner rental rather than go through a booking company thinking the condo would be nicer and well maintained. First, the owner was difficult to work with, there was a huge deposit, non refundable if you did not abide by the numerous threatening rules, 4 pages long. We asked to check in 2 hours early but were only allowed 1. We decided to go up to the mountain and check in later. When we arrive (2 hours after the regular check in) the condo had not been cleaned. Beds were unmade, floors were dirty and fridge had spoiled milk with old food and over all the kitchen was a mess. We called the owners and they sent someone 30 minutes later and it took them over an hour to clean up. Housekeeping said they had never been notified to clean it. We had to do the kitchen ourselves since we needed to unpack all the perishables.
Later that night tried to use the hot water but it would not work. We had turned on the water heater as soon as we arrived, but we were not informed to also move a valve to get hot water.
We were tired, dirty, and hungry, not happy campers.
The condo location was good, a quiet area. The inside was old and dated and inside the kitchen cabinets and drawers were dirty and very disorganized. We saw several other condos in the same location and talked to the renters. Much nicer and no problems. Our cleaning deposit was refunded but the stress of arriving with such a mess did not cover the inconvenience.
This will be our last time booking with these owners.

Owners response: Sometimes you run across guests that change their opinions between when you are dealing with a situation and afterwards when they review. We strive to make the best experience for our guests. First the guest did ask for an early check in several months in advance. I approved an hour early with the option of 2 if I did not have back to back guests (housekeepers would not be able to clean the condo in time if we had back to back guests). As we approached the check in date we did permit a 2 hour early check in. Guests ultimately checked in about 5 and notified me that the condo was not clean. I immediately contacted housekeeping owner and was able to have the condo cleaned within 45 min of notification. Unfortunate situation, yes, but we did respond quickly to rectify the situation. It was ultimately determined that the housekeeper made the error rather than owner (contrary to guest's comments). We contacted guest later that evening and they were pleased with the quick response and resolution. However we did give them free housekeeping service in exchange for the inconvenience. Clearly this guest changed their tune when they reviewed our condo. All the furnishings in the condo are less than 3 years old so I'm not sure what they mean by "dated". Yes, we do have a large security deposit to assure the condo is taken care of nicely. We have found through our own experience that when there is more at risk, guests take better care of the condo which means a better experience for following guests. Rules are relatively simple beyond normal rental contract language. No smoking, no pets, no "stacking" the condo with more than 8 guests. This assures that the condo is cared to our standards and protects a family member that has allergies. Its unfortunate that this guest did not feel they had the same experience of other guests that have reviewed our condo. We did the best possible by responding quickly and offering a refund to the owner. If they felt there were better accommodation when they arrived with the unfortunate situation caused by our housekeeper we would have refunded their entire amount, but they never expressed any dissatisfaction during their stay.

Top Notch Experience

Review submitted: February 24, 2014   Date of arrival: February 7, 2014

This was one of my best rental experiences in Mammoth. I've stayed at other units in Snowcreek before and I wasn't that impressed. This place in the other hand was clean and very well taken care of. The owner was very helpful and easy to work with. I will definitley stay here again in the future!

Recommended for: adventure seekers, families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway

Owners response: Thank you for your kind response. We try to keep our condo in top condition so that it is great experience when we go there as well as our guests.

Great stay in Mammoth

Review submitted: April 17, 2013   Date of arrival: March 29, 2013

I stayed here with 2 friends, and we had a wonderful time. It's located close to the village, so you can walk home if you like. It's very close to the mountain as well. The place is in good condition, and it's quite large. LOTS of vertical space, so the place is actually like...5 stories with rooms on each story, so there is a lot of space.
