activities and attractions in Kailua-Kona The Big Island
Keauhou Punahele is located six miles south of downtown Kona at the end of Alii Drive. We overlook the Kona Country Club Golf Course, palm trees, and the Pacific Ocean for your spectacular sunsets. The complex features an assigned, convenient parking space, gated swimming pool and hot tub, manicured lawns and beautiful tropical flowers.
You are within a short walk to Keauhou Bay, its harbor and access to water activities including fishing, sailing, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, and dive cruises to Kealakekua Bay. The Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa down the street offers a full service Salon & Spa offering ocean front massages, a weekly luau, and is famous for their Manta Ray viewing every evening.
The well maintained and peaceful complex is conveniently located an easy one mile walk to Keauhou shopping center featuring a weekly farmer’s market with local produce, Hawaiian entertainment, restaurants, cinemas, shopping, drug store, post office, and a large food store which sells local, fresh fish. A fabulous swimming, snorkeling and picknicking area, Kahaluu Beach, is located less than 2 miles away where you probably will see turtles sun bathing. In the winter months, whales can be spotted off the coast. There is a local free trolley that offers transportation along the coast to the beaches, shops, and into the scenic town of Kona. Great and reasonable golf is available by walking to the clubhouse of the 36-hole Kona Country Club to reserve your tee time.
What is there to EXPLORE on the Big Island?
Drive up north to Kua Bay Beach. There is no sign on the highway, but it is at mile market 89 across from the Memorial Cemetary. Or go further north to the famous Hapuna Beach for an afternoon of waves and sunning. Explore the amazing Hamakua coastline. Take in the amazing view of the Waipio Valley or venture down and experience the valley on horseback, and don't forget to stop for a warm Malasada (Portugese donut) while you are over there. Hike out to Akaka Falls and experience the town of Hilo. Don't miss the Big Island Candy Company and the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Tour. Explore the Volcanoes National Park and see the lava flowing into the ocean.
Or head south and rent kayaks at Kealakekua Bay, stop at the Banana Bread Bakery and enjoy the best banana bread on the Island. Visit Puuhonua Honauna the City of Refuge or go snorkeling at "Two Steps". Hookena beach is one of our favorites where the locals go.
